Theme: Jobs and future plans

Objectives:

practical: to improve students’ speech skills –  listening,  speaking, reading and writing; to expand students’ vocabulary, to form students’ skills of communication according to the given situation, to check students’ practical skills on the topic;

educational: to expand students’ knowledge of English as a foreign language;

developing: to develop a creative way of thinking, imagination, the ability to think logically; to enrich students’ knowledge about jobs.

Equipment:  pictures, texts for reading.

 

Procedure

 I. Greetings

  T: Good morning, students! Glad to see you. Are you ready for the lesson? Let’s start our work. Today we will talk about jobs, professions and about our future plans.

 II. Warming up

Game “catch phrase”

Business before

pleasure

Jack of all trades

is master of none

The hardest work is

to do nothing

Through hardship

to stars

He that would eat the fruit

must climb the tree

Doing is better

than saying

 

 

III. Brainstorming

T.: Students, what associations appear in your mind when you hear the word “Job”?  Split into pairs and discuss this issue. You are given one minute to think it over and present your ideas.

(Students work in pairs discussing this question)

The time is up. Have you got many ideas? Present them, please.

  1. I think it is associated with modern jobs.
  2. In my opinion it is impossible to imagine successful person without job.
  3. Many people are interested in different jobs. 

IV. Main body

Make up sentences using “mind map”

V. Speaking

Exchange your opinions about different occupations which require the following.

  • Working indoors\ outdoors
  • Meeting new people
  • Helping people
  • Having long holidays
  • Getting up very early
  • Having long working hours
  • Earning a lot of money
  • Being creative

Discuss in groups:

  1. Why is it important to make the right choice of profession?
  2. Have you made your choice?
  3. Are you going to follow the advice of your parents?
  4. What college or university are you going to enter?
  5. What is your favourite subject at school?
  6. Do you want to become a _____? Why?

VI. Writing

Write a paragraph about the career you would like to follow. Mention about:

  • What you know about it
  • What qualifications you will need
  • Why it attracts you
  • Why you think this kind of career will suit you

VII. Hometask

Write your own applying for a job.

VIII. Summarizing

T: Thank you very much for your work. We have done different exercises and I’m pleased with your work. Have a nice day.
