THE- with nouns which are unique (єдині у своєму роді предмети): the sunwith the names of rivers (the Thames), seas (the Red Sea), oceans (the Atlantic Ocean), mountain ranges (the Alps), deserts (the Sahara), groups of islands (the Philipines), countries which include words “state”, “kingdom”, “republic” (the United Kingdom)with the names of musical instruments (the guitar)and dances (the waltz)with the names of hotels, theatres, cinemas, ships, newspapers, museumswith nationality words (the Ukrainians) and names of families (the Browns)With titles when the name of the person is not mentioned (звання та титули без імені людини) the Queen BUT !!! - With historical period and events (the Middle Ages) BUT!!! World War II- with the words only, last, first used as adjectives: Colin ate the last piece of apple pie- with the adjectives\adverbs in superlative form (найвища ступінь порівняння прикметників) the most beautiful girl- when we are talking about something specific or when the noun is already known (коли ми говоримо про щось конкретне або знаємо про що йде мова)I bought a new cap. ZERO ARTICLE(артикль не вживаємо)- with uncountable and plural countable nouns when talking about something in general (незлічувані і злічувані іменники в множині коли говориться про щось в загальному): Lizards are reptiles. (Lizards in general)- with the names of countries (Italy), cities (Paris), streets (Green Street), parks (Hyde Park), mountains (Everest), railway stations, bridges (London Bridge), individual islands (Cyprus), lakes (Lake Victoria), continents (Africa)- with the names of sports, games, activities, school subjects, days, months, celebrations, colours, drinks, meals, languages (without the word “language”) I speak Spanish. BUT!!! The Spanish language is spoken in Spain.- after the words this, that, these, those. This person, those people- with means of transport: by bus\car\train\plane……- with the names of school, college, university. Shevchenko University- with two- word names Westminster Abbey BUT!!! The White House
