By the end of the lesson students will be able to:

• use vocabulary related to Thanksgiving: harvest, turkey, parade, family dinner, celebrate, pilgrims, etc.;
• understand the basic history, modern traditions, and food connected to Thanksgiving;
• work in groups to prepare short presentations;
• compare American and Ukrainian harvest traditions;
• describe photos, match words with pictures, answer simple questions.                       Vocabulary

• Modern celebrations: parade, family dinner, football game, gratitude.
• Food: turkey, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce.

• Pictures of Thanksgiving origins, modern celebrations, and food

• STRUCTURE OF THE LESSON (4 STAGES)

1️⃣ Warm-Up (5–7 min)                                       Aim: activate background knowledge, introduce topic                            Activities:

Show 3 pictures (Pilgrims, modern Thanksgiving dinner, turkey).

• Ask simple questions:
  • "What do you see?"
  • "What holiday could it be?"
  • “What food do you recognize?”

Students make predictions.

2️⃣ Presentation (10–12 min)

Aim: introduce vocabulary & short facts for group tasks

Teacher explains briefly (A2-friendly):

• Origins: Pilgrims came to America → Native Americans helped → harvest feast.
• Modern traditions: parades, family time, saying “Thank you.”
• Food: turkey, mashed potatoes, vegetables, pumpkin pie.

Use flashcards + pronunciation drill.

3️⃣ Practice: GROUP WORK (20–25 min)

Students are divided into 3 groups, each gets a topic + worksheet.

GROUP 1 – “The Origins of Thanksgiving”

Tasks:

1. Match pictures with words: Pilgrims, Native Americans, harvest, feast.
2. Put sentences in order (simple timeline).
3. Create a mini-poster: “Thanksgiving started because…”
4. Prepare 3–4 sentences to present.

GROUP 2 – “Modern Celebrations”

Tasks:

1. Picture-description activity (parade, dinner, football game).
2. True/False statements:
   • People watch parades on Thanksgiving.
   • People give presents.
   • Families cook dinner together.
3. Write a short list: “People do this on Thanksgiving…” (3 points).

GROUP 3 – “Thanksgiving Food”

Tasks:

1. Match foods: turkey, corn, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce.
2. Short categorizing task:
   • Sweet? Salty? Vegetable?
3. Create a simple menu: “Our Thanksgiving Dinner.”
4. Practice sentence patterns:
   • “We eat turkey.”
   • “I like pumpkin pie.”

Group Presentation (5 minutes)

Each group presents their poster/menu (A2: 3–5 simple sentences).
Teacher supports with prompts.

4️⃣ Production / Wrap-Up (5–8 min)

Aim: reflect, personalize, compare cultures

Whole-class activities:

• “Say something you are thankful for.” (1 sentence per student)
• Mini-comparison:
  • “What Ukrainian holiday is similar?” (e.g., Свято врожаю, День Подяки в Україні)
• Quick exit ticket:
  • Write 2 new words you learned.

Extra Optional Activity

Thankful Tree:
Each student writes one thing they are thankful for on a paper leaf and puts it on the board “tree.”
