Subject of the lesson: In the park
Objectives: introducing new vocabulary; developing listening, reading and speaking skills; practicing in using new grammar material (modal verb “must”).
Outcomes: by the end of the lesson the students are expected to be able to identify different things in the park; to understand a short story; to understand and use must and mustn't.
Teaching aids: laptop, TV, CB, WB, blackboard.
Lesson Procedure
- Good morning students! I’m glad to see you.
- Good morning!
Students sing the song “Hello!” with gestures:
- We’re going to start our lesson with the song, as usual. So please, stand up and sing the song. (students are singing the song)
Teacher presents new vocabulary:
- Alright students, the topic of our today’s lesson is about park. First of all, we’re going to write down new vocabulary, so, open your notebooks and tell me please What day is it today? (It is Friday) Now tell me please what month is it now? (It is February) Well done! And now, please, let’s write down new vocabulary:
Path – стежка; grass – трава; flowers – квіти; bin – смітник; trees – дерева; playground – ігровий майданчик; fountain – фонтан; litter – сміття.
Teacher says all the words again for children to repeat.
Teacher plays the recording of new vocabulary first time for students to listen and point to the appropriate pictures of places in the park. Then teacher plays the recording second time for students to repeat in chorus:
- Now we’re going to listen the recording of new vocabulary, please open your books on page 80, exercise 1. Your task is to listen new vocabulary and choose the correct pictures. (students are listening the recording) And now you should listen and repeat the words. (students are listening and repeating words)

2.3.1. Pre-listening. Speaking (4 min)
- Now, let’s have a look at exercise 2. Tell me please where are the children? (In the park) What have boys got? (A skateboard and a book) What is little girl looking at? (At the tree) Who is playing with the ball? (Amy) Where is Max? (In the fountain)
2.3.2. Listening (4 min)
Teacher plays the video recording 2 times for students to listen and follow the words of the story in their books:
- Now we’re going to watch the video recording and your task is to listen and follow the words of the story in your books. Let’s get started.
2.3.3. Post-listening (3 min)
- Alright, now tell me please who wants to pick flowers? (Holly) Who walks on the grass? (Holly) Who wants to go to the playground? (Amy) Who falls into the fountain? (Max)
2.3.4. Reading (4 min)
- Now, let’s read the story, playing roles of Amy, Max, Holly and Leo. So, please, who would like to read? (8 students read the story)
2.4. Practice of the new grammar (10 min)
- Now, open your books on page 81 and let’s have a look at the Let’s learn box. Please read the examples given there. (students read aloud one by one):
We must do our homework.
They mustn’t talk in class.
You must turn off your mobile phone.
You mustn’t walk on the grass.
Alright students, as you can see our new grammar topic is modal verb “must”, which in ukrainian language means “повинен, мусиш”. Its negative form is “must not” or “mustn’t”. And now please read again and translate the sentences.
Well done, now let’s go back and find out new rules in the text. (Mustn’t pick the flowers. Mustn’t walk in the grass. Mustn’t play in the fountain.)
Please open your workbooks on page 75 and let’s do exercise 1.
