When I came back to the flat I was sharing with Mark, a college friend, it was already past midnight. I had spent the weekend in my hometown with my parents and I was feeling quite relaxed. I quietly unlocked the door and went into the flat. (1)___ I nearly fell over Mark’s sports bag, which he’d carelessly left in the middle of the hall.
