Jessica Watson - a hero
On 18th October 2009, 16-year-old Jessica Watson set out to do something no one her age had ever done before - to sail around the world alone without any help. She started her trip in Sydney, Australia, on her ten-metre boat and after seven long months alone at sea she finally ended up back in Sydney Harbour on 15th May
20 I 0. As expected, she got a hero's welcome, with thousands of people there to greet her, including 18-year-old Mike Perham. Perham had sailed around the world the previous year at the age of 17.
When she was asked why she wanted to make this difficult journey, Jessica simply answered that she wanted to do something to be proud of. But her trip did not end as well as she had hoped. Instead of listing her as the youngest person to ever sail
around the world alone, the World Speed Sailing Record Council said she needed to have sailed 2000 nautical miles more than she did to break the world record. After hearing this, Jessica wrote in her blog, 'If I haven't been sailing around the
world, then it beats me what I've been doing out here all this time.'
