For each task you will choose the best possible answer from four possible answers (a, b, c or d) or two letters (T/F (True or False)) as specified prior to each task. Text 1                                                           Planting trees

Ethiopia has broken the world record for the largest number of trees planted in one day, while simultaneously making the world a little greener. Ethiopians planted more than 350 million trees in just 12 hours earlier this week. This smashed the previous record, held by India, by 50 million trees. Ethiopia's minister of innovation and technology announced his country's record-breaking feat on Twitter. He proudly revealed that people had planted 353,633,660 trees in a bid to help the environment. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who participated in the tree planting festivities, congratulated everyone involved in the record for their efforts and for doing their bit for the planet.

Ethiopia's record-breaking achievement is part of a wider strategy of planting 4 billion trees between May and October. The country is well on its way to achieving this goal. So far, volunteers, businesses and government workers have planted more than 2.6 billion trees nationwide. Ethiopia is attempting to reverse the cutting down of many of its forests. The Farm Africa organization reports that less than 4 per cent of Ethiopia's land is forested. This is a sharp decline from the 30 per cent of land on which trees grew at the end of the 19th century. A recent study reported that planting billions of trees was the cheapest and most effective way to absorb carbon dioxide and thus help to tackle global warming.

Task 1: decide if the statements are True or False

1.    The previous tree-planting record was held by China.

Text 3                                              Adventures in Bali

The streets of Ubud were as busy as they were noisy. Bicycles, cars, pedestrians, and motorcycles all fought to stay on the road in what seemed like a giant, chaotic mess.

‘Look out!’ Liz yelled, as she pulled me onto the pavement. A taxi pulled to a screeching stop within two feet of us.

‘Hey!’ I screamed at the driver, ‘You almost hit me!’

A short, young man jumped out of the taxi and ran up to us. ‘I’m sorry, madam, you needed a taxi, right?’ he asked, with a huge smile on his face.

It was then that I realised that this kind of driving must be normal in Bali. Liz and I looked at each other, then at the smiling taxi driver, and decided to forgive the young man and take him up on his offer. After all, we had been walking all day, and our hostel was still a 45 minute walk away.

Wayan, our driver, turned out to be extremely friendly and a passionate surfer. When we told him that we wanted to try surfing while in Bali, he offered to take us himself. He even offered to lend us two of his extra surfboards. We were so touched by his generosity, we immediately accepted and arranged to meet up the next day.

At sunrise, we met up with Wayan on Kuta beach, a surfing point that attracted some very experienced surfers. However, after a short lesson with Wayan, I felt comfortable enough to give it a try. Liz felt she needed more practice and stayed on the beach practising with Wayan. The waves were huge, so I was careful not to paddle out too deep. I managed to catch a small wave without falling off of my board, and felt very proud of myself. After a second successful try, I decided to paddle out a bit deeper. I saw a large wave approaching and set myself up on my surfboard. The next thing I knew, the huge wave was crashing over me. I immediately went under and felt myself tumble about. All of a sudden, I felt a sharp pain in my leg and realised I had been cut by a sharp piece of coral. I finally reached the surface, gasping for air, and cried out loud in pain. Thankfully, Wayan and Liz reached my side before the next wave crashed over me, and pulled me out to shore. Breathless, I took one look at my leg, and passed out. The truth is, I never did react well to the sight of blood, even if it was my own.

The next thing I remember, I was lying on a bed with a doctor standing above me. Apparently, Wayan and Liz had brought me to the local hospital. The doctor was just finishing stitching up my cut, which reached from my ankle all the way to my knee. He bandaged me up, gave me some very strong antibiotics, and told me to avoid going in the water for the rest of the trip.

Even though I was in a lot of pain for the next couple of days, I managed to remain positive. I promised myself, and Wayan, that I would come back to Bali soon. Meanwhile, I would have my scar to remind me of my amazing travel adventure.

Task 3: Choose the correct letter a, b, c or d.

1. What almost hit the two friends on the street?

Text  2                                             Alone in America

After living in the United States for nearly 18 months the impression I have is of the desperate loneliness of the people. This is, obviously not a physical loneliness but one of the spirit.

Americans don’t talk to each other, they talk at each other. Conversation isn’t two-way any more; it’s no longer an exchange of ideas. Instead it has become a situation in which you express your view of the world, or the subject under discussion. The “winner” of the conversation is the one who can speak longest and loudest and so verbally beat the other. This is very unnerving for the new-comer. It’s rather like a living at a perpetual cocktail party, where nobody listens to anybody. The noise has become a substitute for contact. As long as noise is being made it means that people are there, that you are in touch. If there’s quiet, you and everybody else are dead.

Another symptom is the constant flow of personal information from everyone. Just yesterday, at a party, I met a young woman who, in the course of the conversation lasting for 10 minutes, told me everything about her husband’s job, salary and prospects, her children’s ages, illnesses and academic achievements, her job, salary, prospects, physical defects and home, her marriage, how and where she and her husband had met, and so on! Of course, I was expected to provide her with similar information about myself. When I started to discuss her information, not expecting this, she was surprised. Then she became quite embarrassed, excused herself and almost ran 58 to the bar for a drink. You see, she didn’t expect me to listen to her, but rather to wait for her to stop talking.

Where does all this lead the Americans (and us for that matter) I wish I knew. It’s frightening thought that in a country of over 200 million people it’s possible that there isn’t one conversation being held.

Task 2: decide if the statements are True or False

6 .    Americans are keenly interested in the person they talk to.
