A Stormy Night

Fifteen –year old Joey Stevens talks about an unforgettable night.

I had never experienced a hurricane before my family and I moved to Louisiana. However, hurricanes are common in this part of the USA and, less than a year after we arrived, we got the news that a hurricane was heading our way.

Hurricanes are incredibly strong storms. They happen every year in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean when winds of over 70 miles per hour blow around in a circle. They are hundreds of miles wide and cause a lot of damage when they reach land. Because of this, we knew that we needed to be well prepared!

We had some time before the hurricane arrived so we made sure that we had everything that might need: bottles of water, tins of food, batteries, candles and a radio. As the hurricane approached, I felt nervous and scared, but also a bit excited. As my brother and I were checking the house and garden to make sure that nothing would blow away easily, we saw dark clouds in the sky. The wind was getting stronger and it began to rain.

The storm soon became really strong. We sat in the living room listening to the sound of the wind shaking our house. It was very loud and I was worried that our roof would blow off! Suddenly the lights went off and we were in the dark. We listened to the noise outside and hoped that there wouldn’t be too much damage. Eventually I fell asleep. In the morning, the wind was still blowing, but it was much less powerful.

When it seemed safe to go outside, we went out. Although there was a lot of damage, our house had avoided most of it. However, a tree had fallen on our neighbours’ house and destroyed their roof. We knocked on their door. They were scared, but luckily they were safe. We invited them to our house to share some of our food and water. It was a week before the shops opened and we got electricity again, so I was glad that we were so well prepared!

Hurricanes are powerful storms that happen only in deserts.

Forest Fires

Forest fires are becoming a huge problem all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of square metres of trees are burnt every year. 1___  As a result, many people are left without a home. One big reason for so many forest fires around the world is climate change. Climate change is the way our planet’s weather is changing. 2___  This means more fires starting and those fires being more difficult to put out. In addition, while some fires start naturally, others happen because of human activity. 3___  And as people spend more and more time outdoors

enjoying nature, forest fires are more likely to happen. Firefighters have to be specially trained to stop these fires, using equipment such as planes that drop water on the fire from above.

Big fires that burn for a long time are not good for the environment or for people. 4___  Many people may not know this, but they can be good for nature and help it to renew itself. Small forest fires help clear away old or dead trees to make room for new ones. The burnt wood turns into ash, which helps the new forest to grow. 5___  The problem starts when there are too many and they grow too large.
