A tired traveller arrived in a small village. He had neither food nor money and had not eaten for days. The one thing he did have was cooking pot that he used on those rare ocassions when he had something to cook.
He made a small cooking fire, placed his pot on it, and poured some water into the pot. When a few villagers asked what he was doing, he replied that he was making a Stone soup. He then took a smooth, round stone he had in his pocked and dropped into the pot.
As the water was warming up, the traveler was telling the villagers stories of his adventure and the exciting things he had seen. He tastes his soup and said that it was nice but a bit of salt would bring out the flavour. One curious villager went home and returned with some sault for the soup.
The traveller told more stories and said that a couple of carrots and an onion would be a nice addition to the delicious soup. So, another villager brought a few carrots and an onion for the soup. Then the traveller asked for potatoes, a bit of meat and some celery.
Finally, the soup was ready and everyone enjoyed the tasty meal prepared for them from just a stone , and a few other things.
