Being a tour guide in London
I’m Elizabeth. I live in London. I know its people, streets and historic places. I also know its palaces and parks, cinemas and theatres and its shopping malls. I love this city. It’s one of the busiest cities in the world and it has got the best places to hang out. I am really happy to share my knowledge of London with other people.
I decided to become a tour guide in London. I took some courses, read a lot of books and learnt how to speak clearly and interestingly in public. I think it was a great decision because I know a lot of facts about the city. I can answer almost all the questions tourists ask me about London’s nightlife, its dangerous areas and – most of all – its people.
My job is very exciting. You have to have good people skills, be sociable and organized. You have to be a good and caring listener because people often have problems with their accommodation, train tickets or their health. You may need to help them. I am always punctual and start my tours on time, and I love telling creative stories about some parts of the city.
After a day’s work, I am often tired – I sometimes repeat the same things and feel a bit bored. But when the tour finishes, people come to thank me for showing them around the city. They tell me I am reliable and have a good sense of humour. This is what really makes me happy about my work.
