London, with a population of more than 9 million people, is the largest city in the world after Tokyo and New York. It is one of the word’s most important ports and it is the capital of Great Britain.
There are four main parts of London: the City, the Westminster, the West End and the East End. The very centre of London is Trafalgar Square. The National Gallery, which has one of the world’s greatest art collections, is in Trafalgar Square. Nelson Column can also be found in this square. It has dominated Trafalgar Square since 1840.
The historical centre of London is the City. Now it is the financial centre of the United Kingdom. Here you can find St. Paul’s Cathedral. Fleet Street is famous for newspaper offices.
The Houses of Parliament stretch along the Thames’s North Bank. The Union Jack (the flag of the U.K.) flies from Victoria Tower only when the Parliament is in session. Big Ben, the famous clock, is also in one of the Towers.
There are some parts of London which have some distinctive features. For example, the West End is famous for fashionable shopping and entertainment centres, the East End is an industrial district, Westminster is the place for government offices, the City is a financial centre, and Soho is known for international restaurants.
The oldest underground system called “tube” is still one of the oldest in the world. There are more than 275 stations. The famous red “double-deckers” are also an important part of the public transport system.
There are many museums in London. One of them is extremely popular with tourists. It is Madam Tussaud’s Museum of wax effigies of famous people. In London there is so much to see that a month will not be enough to see everything.
