The UK

It is located in the north west of Europe. The North Sea and the English Channel separate it from Europe. It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the influence of the Gulf Stream it has a warm and mild weather. It consists of four parts. The longest distance on the mainland is about 1400 km.

The whole country is governed by the parliament sitting in Westminster. But Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also have their own assemblies. The official name of the country is

It is washed by the North Sea and the Irish Sea. Its main rivers are the Thames and the Severn. Its name refers only to England, Scotland and Wales, not to Northern Ireland. It is one of the British Isles.

It got its name from the Angles, one of the Germanic tribes. They settled during the 5th and 6th centuries and called the place Anglaland, which meant “land of the Angles”.The national symbol of this land is the Tudor rose. On 23 April all citizens celebrate St George's Day, their National Day, with St George Cross. 

It is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. It occupies a third of Great Britain. All the lakes are called lochs. Men wear kilts and play the bagpipes. Blue and white St Andrew Cross and a thistle flower are its symbol.

Much of its land is mountainous and is known for its sheep farming. People call it “the land of song” and like playing rugby. Their patron saint is known as “David, the water drinker”.

Every year on 17 March all citizens celebrate St Patrick's Day. The whole capital are in green this day. The people dance and wear green clothes.
