The World of Painting

History paintings are not limited to those depicting “historic scenes”. The term derives from the Italian word ‘istoria’ meaning narrative (story), referring to paintings showing exemplary deeds and struggles of moral figures. The latter might include Saints or other Biblical, pagan divinities, mythological heroes as well as real life historical figures. The depiction aim is to elevate the morals of the whole community.

Scenic paintings portrayed the divine harmony of nature and a calm confidence in current climatic prosperity. Many painters focus their attention on the atmospheric effect, dissolved into a haze of colour and light, to express their feelings for nature’s grandeur and immensities.
