Formative assessment tools for inclusive English lessons
Ready-to-Use Printable Materials.
Emotion & Energy Scale
calm / tired / happy / excited
colour-coded
icon-based
Used for checking emotional readiness to learn
How to use it in class
At the beginning of the lesson, pupils point to an icon that shows how they feel (calm, tired, happy, excited).
This helps me understand their emotional readiness to learn.
If many pupils feel tired or excited, I adapt the lesson (more movement, shorter tasks).
Exit Tickets (Visual)
smile scale
picture choice
colour response
Used for quick reflection at the end of the lesson
At the end of the lesson, I ask pupils to choose a smile, picture, or colour that shows how they feel about the lesson.
Learners respond without speaking, which reduces stress and saves time.
I use the results to plan the next lesson and adjust the pace.
Traffic Lights Cards
understanding check
self-assessment
lesson feedback
How to use it in class
During or after an activity, pupils show a green, yellow, or red card.
I quickly see who understands, who needs more practice, and who needs help.
This allows me to support learners immediately without putting pressure on them.
“I Can…” Cards
small achievable goals
lesson success criteria
motivation support
At the start of the lesson, I introduce one clear “I can…” goal.
At the end, pupils choose the card that matches what they achieved.
We focus on success and progress, not on mistakes.
Choice Boards
draw / point / say / match
different ways to show learning
All materials support participation, reduce anxiety, and focus on progress rather than mistakes.
How to use it in class
I offer 2–4 ways to show learning (draw, point, say, match).
Pupils choose the option that feels comfortable for them.
All choices are accepted as valid learning evidence.
