On 12 of October we honour Christopher Columbus, the Italian sailor and explorer who was the first European to discover America in 1492

Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic and found the way to Spain.

James Cook discovered two countries New Zealand and Australia.

James Cook made three journeys by sea to the Pacific ocean and became the first European to arrive at the east coast of Australia.

It took his crew more than six months to do a very difficult job - to draw maps of the coasts of Australia and America

The first European visitors to Canada were the Vikings from Iceland and Greenland.

 The French explorer Jacques Cartier came to Canada in 1534 and claimed it for America.

There were about 60 000 French settlers and it formed a good percentage of today’s French Canadians.

The British army also struggled for power in Canada and after many battles the balance was achieved.
