After wedding William and his bride toured America and visited many cities.
Their first child was born in Italy and the girl was called Florence in honor of the place of birth.
Most of the time the family lived in London.
Florence’s dream was to become a painter.
The girl was taught German, Italian and French languages.
When she was 34 Florence became the Head of the hospital for governesses in London.

Her fans popularized nurses’ uniforms and the nursing institutes.
Throughout the world she was known as the «Lady of the Lamp».
She had nothing to do with bringing the Red Cross into army medical activities.
