The mountain climber

Junko Tabei is a mountain climber with some amazing stories to tell. She is famous because she was the first woman to climb to the top of Mount Everest.

In 1975, a Japanese newspaper and a Japanese TV station decided to send a team of Japanese women to Nepal to climb Everest. They advertised for climbers and hundreds of women applied. In the end, they chose 15 climbers, and Junko Tabei was one of them. The women spent a long time in training before they left Japan and travelled to Nepal. They found nine local Sherpa people to guide them and then they started on their climb. They camped at 6,000 metres, but in the middle of the night an avalanche came down the mountain. Fortunately, nobody died but they were all very scared by the experience. Twelve days later, Junko arrived at the top of the mountain and made history.

Today, Junko lives in Japan. She often goes climbing but she doesn’t go up very high mountains these days. In fact, she spends more time working on environmental projects. She wants to protect the natural habitat of Mount Everest and other mountains.
