3.2 Past Simple: was/were

1  Complete the dialogue using was or were.

Wayne: Where ⁰ were  you yesterday morning?

Danny: I ¹            at the pet shop.

Wayne: You ²            at the pet shop?

Danny:  Yes, and my parents ³            with me.

It ⁴            my birthday yesterday, you see. 

There ⁵            a parrot in a cage in the window and…

Wayne:          You’re kidding! Don’t tell me…

it ⁶            your birthday present! 

⁷            you excited?

Danny: Yes, of course I ⁸           ! I still am!

Wayne: I’m not surprised. That’s awesome!

Danny: Do you want to come round and see it?

Wayne:           Let’s go!

2  Complete the description of a zoo using was, were, wasn’t or weren’t.

The zoo ⁰was amazing! It ¹            very big and there

²            hundreds of animals. 

There ³              any insects or fish, 

though – just big land animals and birds, but they ⁴             great. 

It ⁵             much fun being with my parents, though.

They were just embarrassing, my dad especially. He ⁶             really irritating, laughing and pointing at the elephants and acting like the monkeys.

I ⁷             very interested in his animal jokes, either. Next time, I want to go on my own!
