Read the passage opposite about the history of fashion. Decide if the statements are True (T) or False (F).

The history of fashion

People have been wearing clothes for thousands of years and, fashion has existed whether they were aware of it or not. Very few examples of ancient clothing exist, but there are examples of Bronze Age clothing from Denmark which show that their clothes were mainly made of woollen cloth or leather.

About 3,000 years ago, women were wearing woollen skirts and short sleeved blouses or a tunic, also made from wool. On their heads they might wear a small woollen hat. Their accessories included decorated leather belts, arm rings (larger bracelets up the arm), necklaces made of beads, earrings made of wood and handbags covered with dog teeth.

Moving quickly to the nineteenth century, fashion was very important to rich people. In the 1840s women wore dresses which showed their shoulders and had a very tight waist. The popular hairstyle was parted in the centre of the head with ringlets (long tight curls) at the side of the head.

By the end of the nineteenth century, women’s fashions had changed but the biggest change was in the shape of the sleeves on dresses and coats. Dresses and skirts were still down to the ankles, but the styles were more practical than before. They now preferred to wear their hair high on top of their heads, but still with tight curls.

Fashion in the 1920s saw a huge change in style. The cloche hat (a small hat which fitted tightly around the head and almost covered the eyes) became popular instead of the very large hats of previous times. The ‘flapper’ dress was a loose style which allowed women to move much more freely than before. During the twenties this skirt length became shorter and shorter until it reached the knee. This dress truly reflected the freedoms that woman had recently gained.

Fashion has been reflecting the world in which we live for millennia and has changed over that time, but probably not as fast as the last 100 years. Today, people are freer to wear almost anything they want and fashion has become a huge global industry.
