Life in 2050
By mid-century, there will be approximately nine billion people on the planet. These people will be using more resources and leading more high-tech and digital lives. Biologist Joe Cowan says it’s likely that by 2050 most people will live in urban areas.
Robert Michael, director of a research group, thinks that cities of the future won’t look like places from a science-fiction film. The trees that grow in our cities produce their own energy that we could use to provide additional lighting. They could control heating, lighting and security without the need for people to help.
Forget the tall buildings that we see in our cities at the moment. Buildings will be multi-functional and some people even predict huge vertical farms, where farmers would be able to grow crops upwards rather than across flat fields.
In ten years there may be no need for textbooks in classes, predicts Professor Cowan. 3D digital books will be more common. Teachers will be able to re-create a 3D French palace from the 16th century for a history lesson, or allow students to explore outer space from the comfort of their own chairs. The future looks like it’s going to be an exciting place!
