The Past Perfect Tense/ The Past Simple Tense

After John and Ted ..... (finish) their breakfast, they ...... (take) their bags and ..... (go) to the river to fish.

By 4 o'clock the...... (get) any fish, so they decided to go home.

Boys .....(not/like) fishing at all but they .....(promise) their mother to bring fish for dinner, so Ted .....(look) for a shop where they could buy some but the shops ..... (already/close) by that time.
