Lesson Objectives:

By the end of the lesson pupils will be able to:

 1. Identify and form the positive, comparative, and superlative degrees of adjectives.

 2. Use adjectives in comparison correctly in sentences.

 3. Apply the rule through games and speaking activities.

Expected results:

Pupils:

*know rules for forming comparative and superlative adjectives;

*can compare people and objects using shorts and long adjectives;

*can create sentences using “bigger”,” the biggest”, ”more interesting”, ”the most interesting”.

Equipment and materials:

*Flashcards (big-bigger-the biggest; small-smaller-the smallest; act)

*Pictures of animals, toys, people

*Interactive board/cards

*Worksheet or notebook

Lesson Procedure

1.Warm-up

-Hello,children!How are you?

-I’m fine ,thank you.

-Let’s play a game!

 

Game “Adjective Chain

Teacher says an adjective, e.g. big. Pupils say an opposite or another adjective, e.g., small, tall, short, long, ect.

Purpose: activate vocabulary and get pupils talking.

 

2.Introduction of the topic.

Teacher shows flashcards:

*tall-taller-the tallest

*short-shorter-the shortest

*big-bigger-the biggest

*small-smaller-the smallest

 

Rules:

1.Add  – er for comparative ( tall-taller)

2. Add  – est for superlative ( the tallest, the smallest)

3.Use more/the most for long adjectives:

*beautiful-more beautiful-the most beautiful

 

Chant:

Big,bigger,the biggest!

 Small,smaller,the smallest!

Good,better,the best!

Let’s compare,it’s a test!

 

3. Practice

Activity 1: “ Who is taller?”

Show pictures of two animals or children.

Pupils say:

  • The giraffe is taller than the dog.
  •  

Activity 2: “ Find and compare”

Children look around the classroom and make 3 sentences comparing objects.

Example:

  • My pencil is longer than my eraser.
  • The board is bigger than the book.

 

Activity 3: Worksheet

Complete the sentences:

  1. My bag is ___ (heavy) than yours.
  2. Summer is __ (hot) than spring.
  3. Mount Everest is __ (high) mountain in the world.

 

4.Speaking

Pair work: pupils compare pictures.

Example:

A: The elephant is bigger than the monkey.

B: Yes,and the monkey is smaller than the elephant.

 

5.Summary and Reflection

T: What have we leant today?

P: We leant about degrees of comparison.

 

Homework:

Write 5 sentences using adjectives in comparative and superlative degrees.

Example: My house is bigger than my friend’s house.

                   This apple is the sweetest.
