1.Read the information about the UK and do the tasks.

The official name of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is a constitutional monarchy. The king Charles III is the head of the state.

The UK is an island country lying to the north west of Europe. It consists of 4 parts: Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland. The area of the UK is 243 610 km². The population is nearly 69 million people (69,138,192). London is the capital city.

The UK is washed by the North Sea in the east, by the English Channel in the south, by the Irish Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean in the west. The country borders on France.

The geographical position of the country has its disadvantages. The UK is an island.  It influences its climate and trade relations with other countries.

The advantage is that the UK doesn’t have any cruel neighbors, such russia.

3.Read the information about the population of the UK and its biggest cities and fill in the table.

The UK is a large island country. Each part of it is an independent state with its peculiarities.

      England is the largest one. Its capital is London. The population is about 50 mln people. Most of them are English. The largest cities are Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.

      Scotland is the second part by size and population. Nearly 3 mln people live there. Most of them are Scottish. The capital is Edinburgh. Other large cities are Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee.

       Wales is the smallest part by size. Almost 3 mln people live there. Most of them are Welsh. The capital of the country is Cardiff. Other large cities are Swansea, Newport and Barry.

       Northern Ireland is situated on a separate island named Ireland. Nearly 2 mln people live in the country. Mainly Irish. Belfast is its capital. Other great cities are Derry, Craigavon and Lisburn.

6. Read the information about the tertiary sector of the economy of the UK and do the tasks.

London is the world’s most international and connected financial centre, providing an access to global markets. It provides an access to global capital through the London Stock Exchange, the world's most international exchange.

Public services are: health care, social care, criminal justice, education, transport, the removal of waste. The money is used by local authorities to pay for public services.

The countries of the UK are famous for their tourist sphere. You can visit a lot of interesting places: parks, museums, bridges, galleries, theatres, monuments, churches and cathedrals, old and modern buildings.

The British transport is very special. They have got London taxi which is called black cab. Their underground is one of the oldest in the world. London red double-deckers (Rout Masters) are still in use and loved by tourists.

There are many educational institutions in Britain. Among them there are well-known universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Children can attend different types of schools: grammar, boarding, single-sex, mixed, private, secondary, nursery, primary, comprehensive, vocational and college.
