Exploring London: A Journey Through Advertisements

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
Students will be able to summarize information from advertisements and create their own advertisements for places of interest.

ASSESSMENTS:
Students will match advertisements to their corresponding locations and write original advertisements for three places of interest in Kyiv.

KEY POINTS:

  • Understanding the format and elements of an advertisement.
  • Identifying key information in advertisements such as location, opening hours, and activities.
  • Summarizing information effectively to communicate interest.
  • Creating engaging and informative advertisements.

OPENING:

  • Begin with a discussion about travel and famous places in London.
  • Ask students: "If you could visit any place in London, where would it be and why?"
  • Show a brief video or images of famous London landmarks to capture interest.

INTRODUCTION TO NEW MATERIAL:

  • Introduce the elements of an advertisement: location, opening hours, main attractions, and a contact number.
  • Discuss the provided advertisements from the PDF, highlighting key information.
  • Anticipate the misconception that advertisements are only about selling; clarify that they are also about informing.

GUIDED PRACTICE:

  • Work as a class to match the provided advertisements with their respective locations on a map of London.
  • Scaffold questioning: Start with "What is the main attraction of this place?" and progress to "What are the operating hours?"
  • Monitor students by circulating the room and providing feedback on their responses.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:

  • Assign students to choose three places of interest in Kyiv and write their own advertisements.
  • Expectations: Each advertisement should include the location, opening hours, main attractions, and a sentence that would entice someone to visit.
  • Students will share their advertisements with a partner for peer feedback.

CLOSING:

  • Have students share one advertisement they created with the class.
  • Summarize the key points learned about advertisements and their purpose.

EXTENSION ACTIVITY:

  • For students who finish early, challenge them to create a digital advertisement using a program like Canva or Google Slides, incorporating images and text.

HOMEWORK:

  • Students will research a famous landmark in their hometown and write a one-paragraph advertisement for it, to be shared in the next class.
