Topic: School

Objectives: to present new vocabulary, to develop reading and speaking skills, to help students make predictions about reading text based on visual prompts,  to give students practice in reading for gist

 Outcomes: by the end of the lesson pupils will be able to make predictions about reading text based on visual prompts,  use the vocabulary on the topic

Materials: Student’s  books, workbooks, computers (mobile phones), CD.

Procedure

  1. Introduction

Greeting and aim

T: Good morning everyone! Nice to meet you. How have you been, my dear students?

Students’ predicted responses:

             Pretty good.
             Not bad.
             We’re great.
             We’re super.

T: Well, I have a few questions … What’re your favourite school subjects? How many lessons have you got every day? What time do classes start? How many teachers work at our school?

Today we are going to talk about school subjects, classroom activities and  we’ll develop our reading and speaking  skills. The topic of our lesson is “School”

Warm- up

T: Listen and repeat, please.

 (children repeat after speaker)

 What’s the difference between a, b and c?

Listen and tick the sounds you hear.

  1. Main part.

Brainstorming

T: What words do you associate with the word “School”? Write the words on the board.


(school subjects, lesson, break, classmate, teacher,  events, knowledge, etc.)

Vocabulary

T: Listen and repeat the school subjects (SB: Ex.1 p.8)

(Students repeat the words: history, biology, geography, chemistry, PE, ICT, physics, maths, art)

T: Now look at the pictures and decide where you do each of the subjects.

Art room: art

Science lab: chemistry

Gym: PE

Classroom: history, biology,geography, maths

Computer room:ICT

Reading

T: Before reading try to predict the content of the text (ex.2 p.8) with the help of the title and the pictures. How do you think Mellway is different from other schools?

T: Imagine that you’ve met your friend and he is interested about your school. Give him information about it. Make the dialogues using the plan and present them:

  • Name of your school
  • Where is it?
  • What facilities are there?
  • What subjects do you do?
  • What are your favourite subjects?

Hometask:  Find seven school subjects in the grid of task A p.8 (WB); do task B p.8 (WB)

T: Thank you for your work! What did you like most to do at our lesson today?
