Objective:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify different symptoms of common illnesses (stomach ache, headache, toothache, sore throat, cough, cold, high temperature, broken leg) and explain how they feel when they are sick in simple sentences.

Assessment:

imageStudents will participate in a class discussion where they will describe how they feel when they are sick and identify the specific symptom being described. They will also be given a picture prompt and asked to write a sentence describing how the person in the picture feels.

Key Points:

Each illness has specific symptoms associated with it.

When we are sick, we may experience different feelings and discomfort.

It is important to recognize and communicate our symptoms when we feel sick.

Opening:

Show pictures of different people demonstrating various symptoms of illnesses (e.g., holding their stomach, touching their head, etc.).

Ask students to share if they have ever felt sick and how they felt during that time. Encourage them to use descriptive words.

Introduction to New Material:

1.      Introduce the names of the different illnesses (stomach ache, headache, toothache, sore throat, cough, cold, high temperature, broken leg) and their associated symptoms.

2.      Use visual aids such as flashcards or pictures to show the symptoms and practice saying the names of the illnesses.

3.      Ask students to repeat the names and symptoms, and provide opportunities for them to share if they have ever experienced any of the symptoms.

4.      Address the common misconception that all illnesses have the same symptoms.

Guided Practice:

Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of flashcards with pictures of different symptoms.

Ask students to work together to match the symptoms with the appropriate illness.

Scaffold the questioning by starting with easy questions ("Which illness is associated with a stomach ache?") and gradually increasing the difficulty of the questions ("Which illness is associated with a runny nose and cough?").

Monitor student performance by observing their discussions and providing support as needed.

Independent Practice:

Distribute worksheets with pictures of different people experiencing symptoms of illnesses.

Instruct students to write a sentence describing how the person in each picture feels.

Provide sentence frames or sentence starters to support students' writing.

Set behavioral expectations for independent work time and remind students of the objective.

Monitor students' progress and provide individual assistance as needed.

Closing:

Have students share the sentences they wrote describing how the person in each picture feels.

Discuss as a whole class the different symptoms and how they can make someone feel.

Summarize the main points of the lesson and emphasize the importance of recognizing and communicating symptoms when feeling sick.

Extension Activity:

Provide additional pictures or scenarios for students to describe how the person feels based on the symptoms shown.

Encourage students to use creative sentence construction to describe more complex symptoms or feelings.

Homework:

Assign students to draw a picture of themselves feeling sick and write a sentence describing their symptom(s) using the vocabulary learned in class.
