Thanksgiving activities to celebrate Thanksgiving  day with your pupils.

 

You may organize this holiday in a form of a quiz between two teams. The winner is the team which gets the most points.

 

Pupil 1: Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

 

Pupil 2:  Thank you God for the world so sweet,

Thank you God for the food we eat,

 

Pupil 3: Thank you God for the birds that sing,

Thank you God for everything !

 

Pupil 4: We give our thanks for fruits and meats,

For vegetables and special treats.

 

Pupil 5: We thank the world for nature's joys,

For sunny skies and friends and toys.

 

Pupil 6: We all sit down, our thanks to say,

And celebrate Thanksgiving day.

 

Activity 1 Story time

 and ask senior pupils to present it. The teams have to listen to the story and then they will do the task.

 

Pupil 1.There is one day in a year when all Americans stay at home with their families and eat a big dinner. This is Thanksgiving Day. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.

The Pilgrims were a group of people from England who came to America to start a new life. They wanted religious freedom. In September, 1620, Pilgrims crossed the Atlantic Ocean on a small ship. The name of their ship was the "Mayflower" .

 

Pupil 2.The Pilgrims arrived in America in November, 1620. The first winter was very difficult. The Pilgrims were city people. They didn’t know how to farm or

hunt. Many of them died of hunger, cold and sickness.

 

Pupil 3.The story of Thanksgiving says that the Indians met and helped the Pilgrims in
April, 1621. They gave them food and taught them how to plant corn and
catch fish. They grew food and the harvest was very rich.

The Pilgrims were very thankful, and invited the Indians to a celebration in
autumn. They prepared a dinner of turkey, corn, beans, and pumpkins.

 

Pupil 4.Now, every year in the United States, many people celebrate this day as
Thanksgiving. Turkey is still the main dish and pumpkin pie is the most popular dessert.

Activity 2  Thanksgiving grid

 

Autumn is the season

When fruits are sweet

Vegetables are ripen

And good to eat.

 The teams are offered to search for fruits and vegetables in the Thanksgiving grid.

Each team may get 8 points if they find-pumpkin, grape, pepper, apple, corn, turkey,orange,beans.

Activity 3  What is in my harvest bag?

 

Take a bag and put plastic fruits and vegetables there. The pupils with their eyes closed have to take  something out of your bag one by one and guess what it is.

 

Give 1 point each time when they guess.

 

Activity 4  A sweet contest 

Pupils have to guess a fruit by its taste with their eyes closed.

Offer little cubes of apple, kiwi,banana,pear,orange

Each time when they guess the teams get 1 point.

 

Thank you, God, for fruit

You gave us to taste.

 

Activity 5  Magic box of thanks

Some kids wrote what they are thankful for. You will be like Google translator.

One by one teams have to take out sentences from the box. They read and translate them.

I am thankful for sunny and rainy days 

I am thankful for summer and winter

I am thankful for flowers and trees 

I am thankful for my food on the table

I am thankful for the rainbow in the sky

I am thankful for my grandmother and grandfather 

I am thankful for all the happy moments in my life

 

Each team may get 6 points if the answers are true.

 

Activity 6  Pilgrim hat toss. 

 

 Find funny hats. There should be 5 hats for 6 players. Put the hats on the chair. Play music. Kids move around the chair. When music stops they put on the hats. One kid who has no hat is out. Each time someone is out. The last kid is the winner.

 

Activity 7 Thankful Turkey
