Goods can be divided into two main categories: consumer goods and industrial goods. Consumer goods are products purchased by individuals for personal use. They include convenience goods, shopping goods, specialty goods, and unsought goods. Convenience goods, like bread and toothpaste, are bought frequently and with little effort. Shopping goods, such as clothes or electronics, require more time for comparison. Specialty goods are unique items, like luxury watches, which customers are willing to search for. Unsought goods are products that consumers do not usually think of until they need them, such as insurance or medical services.
Another distinction is between durable and non-durable goods. Durable goods, like cars or furniture, last for many years. Non-durable goods, like food and drinks, are consumed quickly. Finally, marketers also differentiate between necessities and luxury goods. Necessities are essential for survival, while luxury goods provide comfort, status, and prestige.
