What is Valentine's Day? St Valentine's Day is an annual festival to celebrate romantic love or friendship. Every year on 14 February people send messages of love and affection to partners, family and friends.

Couples or bosom friends send Valentine's Day cards and flowers and spend special time together to honour their love or kindness to each other.

The Early History of Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day is named after Saint Valentine, a Catholic priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd Century. There are many stories about St Valentine and over time these stories grew into the legend we know today.

Long ago, in Rome, there was akind man named Valentine. He was a priest and he loved people. At that time the emperor Claudius made a strange law. He said that young man could not get married. He thought single soldiers were better fighters.

Valentine did not agree with this law. He believed love was important. So he married young couples in secret.

When Emperor Claudius found out, he was very angry. He put Valentine in prison.

In prison, Valentine was kind to everyone. He helped people and spoke about love and kindness.

Before he died, Valentine wrote a note. He signed it ‘From your Valentine'.
