Donbas

Donbas  is a historically formed region of Ukraine , one of the most developed industrial and energy complexes of the country with significant natural resources and powerful production potential. 

It is located in the east of Ukraine and administratively covers Donetsk region.

The basis of the economy of Donbas is hard coal from the Donetsk coal basin.

The raw material base for industry is also provided by other minerals. 

The region has the lowest urbanization rates in Ukraine . 

In 1869, British entrepreneur John Hughes bought land on the banks of the Kalmius River and built a metallurgical plant there, which became the basis for the future city of Yuzivka . 

In 1885, French businessmen bought salt mines near Bakhmut , and a salt factory appeared there. 

In 1886, the railway was built. 

By 1900, 20 factories were built here at the expense of foreign investors. 

Chemical, mirror, ceramic, and glass factories appeared in Kostyantynivka  .

Donbas is the most populated region of the country. 

Machine builders, metallurgists, and chemists were concentrated in large cities, and the majority of miners were concentrated in workers' villages and small towns.
