Dolphins and whales

Dolphins and whales aren't fish. They are mammals.

Dolphins and whales breathe through a nose or nostril on the top of their heads. This is called a blowhole.

 Whales and dolphins don't sleep because they need to be awake to breathe. Half their brain is awake and half goes to sleep.

 Blue whales are the largest animals. They can be twenty-seven metres long. A blue whale weighs as much as 6.000 children. You could park a car in its mouth!

 Some whales can dive under water for five hours. Dolphins can stay under water for about five minutes.

 Dolphins 'talk' through special sounds and jumps.

 Dolphins can jump five metres. The Spinner Dolphin in Hawaii can jump up and make sixteen turns in the air.

 Dolphins 'see' by making sounds called 'clicks'. Humans can't hear these. When the click sound 'hits' something the dolphin follows it looking for food.

 Some dolphins live in rivers in China and South America.

 Dolphins can't see fishing nets so they often get caught in them.
