We use the verb wish and the expression to express wish. If only is stronger than I wish. Wish indicates the situation that is unreal, it's always followed by a past tense.
Unreal Present
Wish / If only + Past Simple /Past Continuous (expresses a wish that something would be different in the present)
Unreal Past
Wish / If only + Past Perfect (expresses regret that something happened or didn't happen in the past)
Wish / If only + would is used to express polite imperative and / or annoyance)
