Why We Learn English?

Over one billion people speak English. That is almost one-fifth of the world's population. For over 400 million, it is their first language. For the other 600 million, it is either a second language or a foreign language. Today, in fact, over 250 million people are learning English.

English is spoken practically all over the world. It has become the world's most important language in politics, science, trade, and cultural relations. English is one of the official languages of the United Nations Organization. Half of the world's scientific literature is in English. It is the language of computer technology.

To my mind, English is worth studying. There is a proverb: "A new language is a new world." Speaking a foreign language, one can not only read papers, magazines, and original books by outstanding writers, but as well watch satellite programs and travel easily to different parts of the world. Besides, understanding and speaking a foreign language has become necessary when applying for a good and well-paid job.

Learning a foreign language is not an easy task. It is a long and slow process that takes a lot of time and effort. That is why it is very important to have a good teacher.

As for me, I started learning English when I was 8. I was in the second form. I have been studying this language for 12 years. I like speaking English to my friends, teachers, and native speakers, and reading English books in the original most of all. I work on my language systematically.
