celebrate holidays
Resourse Materials: Kuchma M.O., Plahotnik V.M. English: підручник для 4-го
класу, Hopkins F. Get Ready 1, Журнал “Граємо в
англійську” №14, 2005.
Aids: a board, handouts (cards for a matching activity), sound
flashcards, seasonal pictures, phrase charts.
Procedure of the Lesson:
I. Warming up activities.
The teacher:
1.Hello everybody. Our lesson is going to be about English holidays.(the teacher points at the board on which it is written “Thursday, the eighteenth of December. English Holidays”)
2.Pupils, let’s greet each other with the song “Hello” (the teacher plays the song from Get Ready 1)
3.How are you children? (the teacher asks 5 pupils the same question throwing a ball to him/her) Possible answers: I’m fine/ I’m great/wonderful/so-so/OK.
4. The teacher asks the pupils some questions about the date and gives them stickers for the right answers:
What day is it today? (the teacher points at the day on the board to help with the
answer)
What date is it today? (the teacher points at the date on the board to help with

What month is it now?(the teacher points at the month on the board to help with
The answer)
What season is it now?
What are winter months? .(the teacher points at the winter seasonal picture on
the board to help with the answer)
II. Pronunciation & Phonetics.
The teacher:
Children, let’s do a phonetic drill. Look at the phonetic cards on the board, repeat the sounds and the words after me in chorus.(the teacher points at the cards and
words on the board)

[ ei] celebrate, vocation, cake;
[ r ] present, relatives;
[ ] people, sea-coast, Halloween, treat, sweets;
[ ] country, pumpkin, money;

III. Speaking on the topic “English Holidays”.
The teacher asks the pupils some questions:
1.What English holidays do you know? .(the teacher points at the names of the holidays on the door to check the answer, the pupils repeat them again in chorus after the teacher)
2.When do English people celebrate Christmas?
3. What do people do at Christmas?
4. What’s winter like? (the teacher points at the phrase chart on the wall to help
with the answer)
5. Do you remember any English Christmas poems?
6. What is the most popular Christmas song? (the teacher plays the song “Jingle
Bells”the pupils sing)
IV. Reading “English Holidays” part 3 PB p.65
Pre-Reading Questions:
1. What are summer months? (the teacher points at the chart on the board to help with the answer)
2. What are winter months? (the teacher points at the chart on the board to help with the answer)
While-Reading Task:
Pupils open your books at page 65 . Find the words in the text “English Holidays” part 3 and read aloud:
Father’s Day, clothes, that;
June; celebrate, vocation, cake; present, relatives; people, sea-coast, Halloween, treat, sweets;
country, pumpkin, money; coast, most, also, October; autumn, draw.
Post-Reading Task:
Pupils make up as many sentences as you can using the table. Exercise 7 p. 65.
V. Home Assignment: Read the text “English Holidays” part 3 PB p.65 and write . Exercise 7 p. 65.
