Topic: Adventure Story 'The Tunnel' & Around Town Vocabulary Practice

• Educational (Навчальна): To develop students' reading, listening, and speaking skills through the narrative comic strip; to practice reading for specific information and detail; to introduce and revise town vocabulary (toy shop, pet shop, bookshop, market square, supermarket, bus station, sports centre, map); to improve listening comprehension skills using visual prompts.

• Developing (Розвивальна): To develop critical thinking, logical reasoning, and memory; to foster visual literacy (matching text/audio with pictures).

• Socio-cultural (Виховна): To encourage teamwork, mutual help, and problem-solving skills (following the characters' example).

• Learning Outcomes (Очікувані результати): By the end of the lesson, students will be able to correctly name and recognize town vocabulary; understand the main plot of the story 'The Tunnel'; complete comprehension tasks accurately; and identify characters from the listening task.

• Audio tracks for the story and listening tasks.

🕒 Procedure (Хід уроку)

I. Introduction (Вступна частина)

• Greeting & Warm-up (Around Town Vocabulary Revision) (5-7 mins):
Teacher greets the class: 'Good morning, children! How are you today? Let's check who is ready for a new adventure!'
Teacher introduces/revises words from 'Around Town' page using a short flashcard game. Teacher says a number or describes a place, and students say the word: toy shop, pet shop, bookshop, market square, supermarket, bus station, sports centre, map.
Interactive Game 'Guess the Place': Teacher says: 'I want to buy a ball. Where should I go?' Students: 'Sports centre!' Teacher: 'I want to buy a book...' Students: 'Bookshop!'

• Lead-in (Skills Page - Camping Scene) (7 mins):
Look at the camping picture. Ask simple questions: 'What can you see? (A tent, a tree, bikes). Who is camping?'
Listening Task (Ex. 1): Play the audio track. Students listen and draw lines to match names (Olivia, William, Christine, Hannah, Ben, Mike) with the characters in the picture.

II. Main Body (Основна частина — Робота над історією 'The Tunnel')

• Pre-Reading Activity (3 mins):
Look at panels 1–4. Teacher points to picture 2 and asks: 'Who appears on the train? (Horax and Zelda). Are they good or bad? What do they want? (The map).'

• While-Reading / Listening & Energizer (13 mins):
Step 1: Play the audio for frames 1–6. Students follow the text with their fingers.
Step 2: Play the audio for frames 7–8.
Step 3 (Reading practice): Students read the story in roles (Lucy, Ben, Horax, Zelda, Conductor). Pay attention to intonation (e.g., Horax's angry voice, Conductor's polite voice).

We are traveling by train, chug-chug-chug! (imitate train movement with arms)
Now it's dark inside the tunnel, look around! (cover eyes with hands, then look around)
Let's find Horax's hat! Reach up high! (stretch up high on tiptoes)
Take the tickets, quiet, shh! (put finger to lips)
Now we jump out of the train, hop-hop-hop! (gentle jumps on the spot)
And we run to find the clue, stop! (run in place and freeze)
Take a deep breath in... and exhale. Sit down, please!

• Post-Reading Activity: Comprehension Check (7 mins):
Exercise 2: 'Say the correct sentences'. Students work in pairs to match sentence halves from the textbook, then read them aloud.

III. Extension & Conclusion (Заключна частина)

• Discussion & Game 'Who Said That?' (5 mins):
Ask: 'How did Ben trick Horax and Zelda?' (He took the tickets in the dark tunnel). 'What is the new clue?' ('Climb more stairs and look out west.')
Game: Teacher reads a line (e.g., 'Get away from the window!'), and students guess the character (Ben).

• Feedback & Homework Assignment (3 mins):
Reflect on the lesson: ask students what part they liked most. Praise them for active participation.
Homework: Read the story 'The Tunnel' fluently. Write down the full sentences from Exercise 2 into notebooks.
