                           Procedure

I Introduction

1. Greeting

- Good morning, children.

- I’m glad to see you

- How are you today?

- It’s great that you are in good mood, now let’s begin our work.

2. The topic and the aim of the lesson

The topic of our lesson is connected with travelling. Now open your exercise- books and write down the date and the topic of the lesson.

The aim is to review the words on the topic, to practice in reading, listening, speaking and writing skills, to train in pair and group work and to learn more about travelling and places of interest of our country.

3. Motivation

I think you’ll agree with me that we can’t imagine modern life without travelling. When we go to a bus station, a railway station, an airport or a port we can see a lot of people who want to go somewhere. Many years ago people travelled to know something about our planet, different continents, countries.

- But why do people travel now? They can sit comfortably in their arm-chairs and watch a lot of programmes on TV or use computers for this.

 - So why do they do this?

(The pupils’ answers):

- People want to rest and get impressions.

- They go to their relatives, friends.

- They travel on business.

- They want to see the sights of the cities, new countries.

- To learn more about history, culture, traditions.

- To meet new people and even practice foreign language.

- Travelling broadens our mind.

T.You are right, children. Travelling develops our outlook, can give some changes and new impressions in our life, we can discover new things and learn much about different countries, cities. Travelling is the whole world such interesting and exciting.

4. Warming up

T. A lot of people like to travel very much and dream about it.

- What about you?

- Do you like to travel?

- Have you ever travelled?

- Where did you go?

- How did you travel?

- Did you enjoy your journey?

II Main part

Vocabulary practice

1. Brainstorming

T. To speak about travelling we must know a lot of words.

-What words are associated with travelling?

2. Look at the screen, you can see two columns of words, your task is to find the opposites and match them, do this in writing.

1) To get on a bus                                        expensive

2) Dangerous                                                to miss

3) To get into                                                safe

4) To leave                                                    to get off

5) To catch a train                                         to arrive

6 ) Cheap                                                       difficult

7) Easy                                                          to get out of

3. Group work

Let’s divide into 3 groups and try to find one odd word in the list of words. The words for the first group must apply to the travelling by plane, for the second group - to the travelling by train, for the third - by ship.

I The sky, a cloud, a stewardess, a flight, an airplane, a ferryboat, to fly, an airport, to check in.

II A passenger, a train, a conductor, a compartment, a carriage, a dining-car, a pilot.

III A boat, a sail, a seagull, a sea, a river, a luggage, a ticket, a railway station.

4. The next task for you is to guess what word it is:

1) A person who travels. (A tourist)

2) Travelling by ship. (A voyage)

 3) The place where we buy tickets. (A booking office)

4) Things which you take with you when you travel. (A luggage)

5) To come to a new place. (To arrive)

6) A person who serves you on the board of the plane. (A stewardess)

7) A kind of transport which can be used by children. (A bicycle)

5. T. I see you know a lot of words on our topic, what about poems?

Can you recite some of them?

(The children recite the poems)

1) Over the mountains,

Over the plains,

Over the rivers

Here come trains.

Carrying passengers,

Carrying mail,

Over the country

Here come trains.

Over the river,

Over the bays,

Ferryboats travel

Every day.

Watching the seagulls,

Laughing with friends

I’m always sorry,

When the trip ends.

2) I like to ride in a railway train

Through tunnels dark and wide,

Over the bridges crossing the river,

 I feel so safe inside.

When water looks very smooth,

I like to sail by ship or boat.

A sea voyage is very good,

When you feel a sea breeze blow.

But an airplane is the best of all,

It flies so very high

That people look like tiny dots,

And clouds go sailing by.

T. What means of travelling were mentioned in these short poems?

(Trains, ferryboats, plains).

- So how can people travel? (By bus, …)

T. Before travelling you must choose the kind of transport which is the best for you. All means of transport have the advantages and disadvantages. The cheapest is a bicycle but we can use it only for short journeys. A lot of people travel by car because you can stop wherever you want and make your own route. Some people prefer to travel by ship. Wonderful ships cross seas and oceans from one continent to another, they are not so fast as planes but a sea voyage or a river trip is very pleasant. One of the most popular kinds of transport is a train.

- Can you share your thoughts about travelling by train?

6. Speaking practice

P: Some people prefer to travel by train. They find it interesting and comfortable. Most trains have sleeping cars and dining cars. Passengers can sleep or read if they want. Many people like to watch the changing of the nature through the windows. We can go by train in any weather. It is easy to get to the railway station and the tickets are not very expensive.

T: What about disadvantages?

P: The trip is very long because the speed is not high. Sometimes the roads are bad and it’s not pleasant.

7. Reading

1) Pre–reading task

T: Nowadays people are very busy and they often choose the fastest way of travelling - by plane. Unfortunately, a lot of us don’t have such experience. Yesterday we got a letter of the girl who travelled by plane for the first time in her life. Your task is to read the letter and say how the girl felt about her travelling and  if the statements are true or false and correct the mistake in the wrong sentence. Before this let’s look at the new words which will be in the text:

to book a ticket - замовляти квиток

in advance - заздалегідь

a cart - візок

check-in-desk - реєстраційна стійка

to fasten the seat-belts - пристебнути ремені

to smoke - курити

to offer - пропонувати

to feel-felt - почуватися

below - нижче, під

2) Reading the text

Hello, everyone!

Last week I travelled by plane for the first time in my life. I travelled with my parents. We booked the tickets in advance.

We went to the airport by taxi. When we arrived there, we put our suitcases on a cart and went to the airport.

The airport was very busy. There were too many people. Some of them were at the check-in-desk. Others were at the information desk. We had some time before the flight and we were sitting in the waiting-room. When we got on the plane, an air hostess said hello to us and pointed to our seats. There were a lot of people on the plane. She asked us to fasten seat-belts and not to smoke. She also offered some lemonade, mineral water and sweets.

It was fantastic when the plane started going up into the air. I looked through the window. Everything below us was very small - the streets, the cars, the buildings and the people.

I felt very excited!

Julia

3) Past–reading task

Tell me, please, how the girl felt about her travelling?

The next task is to say if the sentence is true or false and correct the mistake in the wrong statement.

1) Julia went to the airport by bus.

2) Julia travelled with her friends.

3) The family booked the tickets in advance.

4) They put their suitcases on a cart.

5) There were a lot of people at the airport.

6) Some of the people stood at the booking office.

7) The family was watching TV before the flight.

8) When they got on the plane, a pilot said hello to them.

9) An air hostess offered them some salad, coffee and juice.

10) The travelling was wonderful.

11) The girl felt unhappy.

T. We have already spoken about some means of travelling and, of course, the next step is to go to the booking office and buy tickets.

Now listen to the dialogue: “At the booking office”.

8. Dramatizing  the dialogue (checking homework)

  •          I would like a ticket to Odesa, please.
  •          When are you going to fly?
  •          Next week, I think.
  •          Just a minute. Flight 100 will be good for you.
  •          When is the flight?
  •          8.30.
  •          Great. How much is the ticket?
  •          Business or economical class?
  •          Economical class, please. Business class is too expensive.
  •          Let me see. That’s 300 hryvnias.
  •          Here you are.
  •          Your change and the ticket, please.
  •          Have a nice trip.
  •          Thanks.

T. After buying the ticket it’s important to think about packing things before travelling.

Now listen to the dialogue between a wife and a husband Mrs. and Mr. Kovalenko,  they are going on their rest.

9. Role - play

Dramatizing the dialogue

She:

- I’m so happy that very soon we’ll be on the sea coast. We’ll take a camera to take photos, sunglasses from the sun, a beach towel, a swimsuit, some blouses, dresses, shorts, T- shirts and…

He:

-I see, my dear, our suitcase will be very heavy of your clothes. We’ll go to the sea coast, not to the theatre.

  •          OK, I’ll take out some dresses, only some.
  •          It’s fine. Do you remember about documents, our passports, plane tickets?
  •          Oh, I have forgotten about them. I’ll put them in my handbag.
  •          I very hope we’ll find them at the airport.

T: So what documents should people take with them while travelling?

(Students’s answers)

T. When people travel by plane for the first time in their life, they often don’t know what to do before the flight and are nervous.

We offer you the dialogue between a customs officer and a passenger “At the gate”

11. Dramatizing the dialogue

Customs officer:

-Can I see your tickets and your passport, please?

Passenger:

-Yes, here you are.

-What is the purpose of your trip? Business or pleasure?

- Pleasure.

- How long will you stay in this country?

 - For ten days.

- Your passport and a visa are in order. What luggage have you got?

- We have two suitcases.

- Will you put your luggage on the scales? It’s all right. Here is your boarding pass. Your flight is 115. Your gate is 5. Have a nice trip.

T.  Dear children, there are a lot of countries in the world where we can go. But to visit some countries we need a visa in our foreign passport.

There is a travel agent, an expert, at our lesson and you can ask him some questions about travelling.

12. Role-play (pupils ask the questions to the travel agent who will show the geographical names on the globe and on the map).
