Subject: Hobbies and Pastimes

Objectives:

•          to revise the vocabulary for hobbies and pastimes;
•          to practice expressions with like + noun, like + Ving, be keen on + Ving, be fond of + Ving, be interested in + noun/Ving;
•          to practice listening to the interview with Mary about her hobby;
•          to develop students’ reading and speaking (dialogical and monological) skills

on hobbies and pastimes;

•          to practice using Present Simple and prepositions;
•          to incorporate group and pair work;
•          to widen the students’ outlook.

Equipment: computer, smart board, pictures of hobbies and pastimes, handouts.

                                                Procedure

 Introduction

        1. Greeting.

            T. Good afternoon, children! I’m glad to see you.

            Ps. Good afternoon, teacher! We are glad to see you too.

            T. Take your seats, please.

        2. Presentation of the theme of today’s lesson.

            T. The subject of today’s lesson is Hobbies and Pastimes. Today at the

                 lesson we’ll summarize our knowledge on the given topic. We’ll revise

                 the vocabulary for hobbies and pastimes, practice our listening, reading

                 and speaking skills on the topic, practice using Present Simple and

                 prepositions. We’ll work in groups and pairs. I hope we’ll do our best to

                 make our lesson interesting and useful. So let’s start.

Main Part of the Lesson

        1. Warming up. Game “Microphone.”

              T. What do you like doing in your free time? Try to use these phrases:

                   I like Ving, I’m fond of Ving, I’m good at Ving, I’m interested in Ving.

              P1: I’m good at painting.     P3: I’m fond of playing the piano.

              P2: I like swimming.            P4: I’m interested in dancing.

        2. Vocabulary Practice.

            a) Memory Game (video Hobby and Hobbies – Vocabulary Chant – ELF

               T. Look, listen and try to remember as many hobbies as you can. It’ll be a

                   group work. (Watching video). Now you have 1 minute to write the

                   word combinations you’ve remembered.

                   T. Your time is over. Let’s  read and count. I see Team .. has a memory

                   like an elephant. Well done!

             b) Doing the vocabulary exercise “My hobby is …”. The task is to match

                 pictures with the words.

          3. Listening. (See Oksana Karpiuk. English 4, Student’s Book. – Libra Terra,

                                 2021, p.20)

                 T. Do you enjoy collecting? What do you collect?

              b) while-listening task

                 T. Now listen to the School News programme (SB p.20, ex.2).The 

                      correspondent is interviewing Mary Woodcraft about her collection.

                      Then say what she collects.

               c) post-listening task

                  T. Now tell me more about Mary’s collection.

                      1. What countries are her dolls from?

                      2. What is her favourite doll?

                      3. Where is her collection now?

                      4. Does the correspondent like Mary’s dolls?

               a) Ex. 1p.18

                  T. Imagine that we are at the Hobby Centre. Look at the pictures and

                      match the names of the clubs to their pictures.

               b) Ex. 2p.18

                   T. Look at the membership cards. Then say.

                   P1. Fay is 38. He goes to the chess club. He is good at playing chess.

               c) T. Now your task is to complete and act out the dialogue.

                         

                          A: I’m going to the … Club. How about you?

                          B: No, I don’t like … . I’m going to the …. Club. Do you want to

                               try?

                          A: When is the … Club?

                          B: It’s on … at … .

                          A: OK, let’s go!

           5.  Relexation.

           6. Reading.

                  T. By the way, do you like reading? What books do you enjoy reading?

               b) while- reading task

                  T. Now you’ll read the letter of the girl from Poland. Be ready to answer

                      the questions before the letter.

                    

                        1. What are her hobbies and interests?

                        2. Which one is her favourite? Why?

                   Comprehension check (answering the given questions).

 

                          A Letter

 My name is Ewa and I come from Poland. I live in Krakow. I have got a lot of hobbies and interests.

At school I play hockey and volleyball, and sometimes go swimming with my friends. I’m fond of foreign travel and meeting people. I want to go to America, especially Hollywood because I’m interested in films and I enjoy reading about famous film stars.

My favourite hobby is pop music because I like dancing. My favourite singer is Amy Lee. I like her because she is really good-looking and she sings well.

 

            7. Speaking on your own hobbies.

                Pupils’ stories about their favourite hobbies and pastimes.

               P1. I am fond of Art. I like dancing. I go to dor town dancing club, I

                     joined  the club when I was 6. We dance folk dances. We meet on

                    Tuesdays and Saturdays at 4 p,m, I want to be a famous dancer.

            8. Writing.

                Choose and circle. Complete with the prepositions ‘in’, ‘of’, ‘at’.

               My father and I is /are fond ___ sport. We like / likes playing tennis very

               much. My father is /are interested ___ history and he am / is good ___ it.

               day but I am / is not good ___ it yet. ___ weekends we usually go /goes

               to the cinema or theatre.

 

Final Part of the Lesson

            1. Homework. Write 6-8 sentences about your classmates’ hobbies.

            2. Summarizing.
