III Main Part

a/   Speaking / Teacher asks students some questions/

1/ What is your favourite party?

2/ What parties do you usually have in your family?

3/ Where do you usually have a party – at home or in a public place?

Teacher: Have a look here. What’s this? / Teacher shows students the samples of invitation cards/. What information does it give you?

Suggested answer: the name, the date, the place of the party.

T: Do you usually send out invitations to parties?

 (Students present their projects – My invitation card)

 b/ Reading

 Teacher: Have a look at the questionnaire. Can you guess what a “party

 goer” is? (someone who enjoys going to parties )

 Task: Answer these questions in your notebooks. Write yes, no or sometimes for each question. Then work out your score.

 Questionnaire: Are you an enthusiastic party-goer?

 1 Do you like going to parties?

 2 Do you ever go to a party when you haven’t been invited?

 3 Do you always try to look good when you go to a party?

 4 Are you usually the first person to start dancing?

 5 Do you ever invite someone you don’t know to dance?

 6 do you ever talk to people you don’t know?

 7 You’re at somebody else’s party and you don’t like the music. Do you

   change the CDs?

 8 Are you often one of the last people to leave the party?

Your score

Each yes answer = 10 points

Each sometimes = 5 points

Each no = 0 points

0-25 Parties are not your main interest in life. When you go to a party you sometimes feel very shy. Why don’t you relax and give people a chance to discover the real you?

30-55 You like a good party. You enjoy yourself but you never get on people’s nerves. You are the kind of person everyone wants at their party.

60-80 You adore going to parties! You are always enthusiastic and you make sure a party is exciting and enjoyable. Every party needs a few people like you. You will probably be party-crazy when you’re 64!

In pairs, students compare their results.

Teacher: Do you agree with your results? Why? Why not?

c/ Writing

Teacher: Write down on a piece of paper three things that you like about parties and three things that you don’t like. Don’t say which is which!

               dancing   loud music   seeing the same people

              meeting new people party food party games

(Students write their own lists on a piece of paper and continue the guessing game in small groups )

d/ Listening

Text: A story about disastrous party

Before-listening: Teacher presents and explains  unfamiliar vocabulary on the board:

Gatecrashes-are people who come to a party when they are not invited;

Village Hall- is a public place in many British towns and villages. It can be hired by individuals or organizations for social events;

complete disaster- a person or a thing that is a complete failure;

to hire- to allow the temporary use of something, in return for pavement;

to refuse- to say or show that one is unwilling to give, accept or to do something;

to leave- to go away from a person or a place.

While-listening: Sue and Lisa had a party to celebrate their fifteenth birthdays. Twist!  went to interview Sue. Listen to the interview and complete the sentences. Choose a or b each time.

Tape script

Twist! Reporter:  Why did you and Lisa have a party together?

Sue: Lisa’s my best friend and her birthday’s the day after mine. Our parents hired the village-Hall so we could have a party together.

Reporter: How many people did you invite?

Sue: There were about twenty from my school and twenty from Lisa’s school.

Reporter: Were your parents there?

Sue: no, we didn’t want them. They weren’t happy about this at first, but then they agreed. However, the party was a complete disaster.

Reporter: Why?

Sue: Everything started off OK. There was lots of food and good music. By ten o’clock everyone was dancing. I was really happy. But then Lisa

Came up to me and said, “Who are those two boys in the corner?” I didn’t know. I thought they were her friends but they weren’t. They were gatecrashes.  Most of our friends don’t drink but one of these guys was drunk and had a bottle of vodka. We didn’t know what to do, but I was very brave.  I went up to them and asked them to leave. But they refused.

Reporter: So what did you do then?

Sue: Nothing. We didn’t want any trouble. It was OK for a while. Then suddenly there was a fight. The boy who was drunk started hitting everyone. I was terrified.

Reporter: What happened next?

Sue: I went to get Dad. He came back to the Hall with Granddad. The fighting had stopped but there was a lot of shouting. Dad was very nice and said it wasn’t our fault. I’m never going to have a party again. If I do, I’m going to ask Dad to wait outside!
