ENGLISH SPRING TRADITIONS
Objectives:
Teacher: Good morning, pupils! We came to this party to play and to talk about our favourite season – spring and about wonderful spring holidays and traditions in Ukraine and Great Britain. Spring is coming and bringing us beautiful flowers, sunny weather and merry holidays. Let’s enjoy it!
Girl 1: Spring Is Coming
The winter is over. There is no ice in the lakes and rivers. There is no snow on the ground. The days are longer and warmer, and the nights are shorter.
Spring is coming. The spring months are March, April and May.
The sky is blue and the sun is shining brightly. The wind often blows very hard in spring. Sometimes the wind is cold, but more often it is warm. When rain and sunshine meet you can see a rainbow in the sky.
Trees and bushes become green. The birds are coming back from the south. They sing beautiful songs.
Teacher: Well done! And now let’s speak about spring holidays and traditions. What spring holidays do you know?
Pupils: Easter, All fools Day, Women’s Day, Victory Day, May Day.
Teacher: Listen to the description of the feast and guess what holiday is it.
Girl 2: There are many holidays in spring. Guess, what spring holiday is it.
Girl 3:
1.On this day we wish a happy holiday to our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, girls, teachers and all women. We give them presents and flowers.
2.It is a great holiday for all Ukrainian people. We greet war veterans and present them with flowers and presents. We go to the city parades. Pupils organize concerts for veterans and meet with the heroes of the war.
Teacher: What poems about spring and weather do you know? Can you recite them?
Pupil1:
When the weather is wet,
We must not fret.
When the weather is cold,
We must not scold.
When the weather is warm
But be thankful together
We must not storm.
Whatever the weather.
Pupils:
WHAT COLOUR IS THE SUN
What colour is the sun?
The sun is gold.
How does it feel?
Nice and warm.
What colour is the snow?
The snow is white.
How does it feel?
Nice and cold.
The sun feels good.
How does it feel?
The sun feels good.
How does it feel?
The sun is warm,
The sun is gold,
The snow is white,
The snow is cold.
The sun feels good.
How does it feel?
The sun feels good.
How does it feel?
The sun feels warm,
The snow feels cold,
The snow is white,
The sun is gold.
Teacher: Thank you, pupils! That was nice. And now let’s have some funny time playing and revising English spring traditions.
English Traditions. A Pancake Day
Girl 1. At Westminster School in London the boys have pancakes for dinner one day in March. Before dinner there is a pancake fight. The school cook makes a very large pancake. He comes out of the kitchen into a hall with a frying pan and throws the pancake high up. The boys try to catch the pancake. They fight for it. The winner of the fight is the boy who gets the biggest piece of cake.
Girl 2. In England there is also an egg-spoon race. The children who run this race, boys and girls, must carry an egg in a spoon. They must not let it fall down. If the egg falls and breaks, they must pick it up with a spoon, not with their fingers. Usually there are not many winners in the egg-and-spoon race.

Teacher: Did you enjoy the games? And now let’s speak about Easter.
Pupil: Easter is the feast of Christ resurrection. It is celebrated according to the Moon calendar on the first Sunday after the first spring full Moon. The week before Easter is pure week. During this time people finish all their work on the field and at home. On the evening of Pure Thursday people return home with lighted candles. The last Sunday before Easter is Willow Sunday. On this day people go to church to bless pussy-willows and tap one another with them. They say: “Not I am tapping, the willow is tapping. Be as tall as the willow, as healthy as the water, as rich as the earth! Easter is in a week!” We celebrate Easter for three days. It is a national Ukrainian holiday.
Teacher: That’s right. And what traditional Easter song do you know? Let’s sing it.
Hot cross buns,
Hot cross buns,
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot cross buns,
If you have no daughters,
Give them to your sons,
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot cross buns.
Teacher: Let’s have some funny time guessing the riddles.
This is the season
When nights are short,
And children have plenty
Of fun and sport,
Boating, swimming –
All the day,
With a merry song
On a sunny day.
When fruit is sweet,
This is the season
When school-friends meet.
When noisy and gay,
And browned by the sun,
With their books and bags
To school they run.
When children ski,
And grandfather Frost
Brings the New Year tree.
When snowdrops bloom,
When nobody likes
To stay in the room.
This is the season
When birds make their nest.
This is the season
We all like the best!
I come from the sky,
I wash the grass,
And over the road
You may hear me pass?
And delicate blue,
I can’t catch it,
And neither can you!
As round as a ball,
Higher than the steeple,
Weathercock and all!
Teacher: Our party is coming to an end. Let’s finish it with a merry song “If You are Happy”.
Pupils sing song “If You are Happy”.
