Integrating Digital Technologies in English Language Teaching
In recent years, digital technologies have become increasingly prevalent in education, including English-language teaching (ELT). These tools not only support traditional classroom instruction but also offer new opportunities for learner engagement, autonomy and skill development (Richards, 2023). This report examines the benefits, methods and challenges of using digital technologies in English-language lessons and offers practical recommendations for teachers.
Firstly, digital tools enhance student engagement and motivation. For example, mobile applications, online platforms and interactive media enable learners to practice listening, speaking, reading and writing in more dynamic, self-paced ways (Handayani, 2024).
Secondly, technology supports learner autonomy. Through digital resources, students can take control of their progress, access materials outside class, receive immediate feedback and engage in peer interaction (Octaberlina, 2023). Thirdly, technology allows for multimodal and rich input. Digital textbooks, videos, interactive worksheets and online quizzes provide multiple channels for language exposure, which can support comprehension and production especially in young learners (Respati et al., 2023).
Finally, professional studies indicate that after the shift to online teaching (during the COVID-19 period) many primary-school English teachers incorporated digital tools into regular classroom practice—such as Learning Management Systems (LMS), digital noticeboards and quizzes—thus embedding technology in routine teaching
Effective implementation of digital technologies in English lessons involves several strategies:
However, integration of technology in English-language teaching also faces obstacles:
Based on the research, educators may consider the following:
In sum, digital technologies hold significant promise for enriching English-language teaching when they are thoughtfully chosen, pedagogically integrated and supported with adequate infrastructure and training. As research shows, the shift toward learner-centred, technology-enabled environments can enhance motivation, autonomy and multimodal skill development. However, challenges of access, teacher readiness and meaningful design remain. Ultimately, successful implementation depends on aligning technological tools with language-teaching goals and continuous reflective practice.
