 “Who knows English best?”

для учнів 5-7 класів

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  

 

Мета:

Актуалізувати лексичні одиниці мови.

Стимулювати розвиток інтелектуальної та пізнавальної активності учнів.

Розвивати пам’ять, увагу, логічне мислення, мовну здогадку, кмітливість.

Розширити кругозір учнів.

Сприяти співпраці між учнями класу, взаєморозумінню.

Виховувати повагу до традицій, моралі народу.

Procedure

 

Teacher.

Dear friends! I’m glad to see you at our English party.

You are welcome to our intellectual game “Who knows English best?”

Two teams of the sixth and the seventh forms will compete and show the knowledge in English. At the end of our game we’ll definite the best team of our competition.

Let’s invite the members of the teams. The members of the first team are… (Greet them, please). The captain is … The name of the team is “Smiles”. Introduce your team:

When the weather is gloomy,

And the sky is grey,

 And you feel unhappy and sad,

Just smile, and the world will change

And you’ll feel in a different way.

(Give your applauds, please.)

 

Let me introduce the members of the seventh form. The members are…

The captain is…The name of the team is “Rainbow ”. Introduce your team:

Rainbow is glad to meet you,

We are glad to greet you,

Be healthy, wealthy, kind, OK,

Today and every day. (Give your applauds, please).

 

We need the jury for our competition. The members are… The girls of the 9th form will be the helpers.

 

Listen to the rules of the game: I’ll give the question to the first team, you may discuss for 10-20 seconds then if you are ready, hands up.

If the team doesn’t know the answer, the other team may answer and get a point. Once you may ask your fans to help you.

So let’s see who’ll be the cleverest. Let’s see who’ll be the first. Let’s see who’ll be the wisest. Let’s see who’ll be the nicest.

 

Let’s start our competition!

I  The first contest is connected with English-speaking countries.

1. What holiday do the English people celebrate on the 14th of February?

2. When do the English people celebrate Christmas?

3. How do we call the English buses?

4. In what country was football invented?

5. What words do children say on Halloween?

6. The name of the game which is sound as the name of a sweater?

7. This is a game when the players try to throw the ball into the basket?

8. What is the kind of sport when the sportsmen dance to the music on the ice?

9. “Romeo and Juliet” is written by…

10. Mark Twain is famous for his work…

11. “The Jungle Book” is written by…

12. Who created Sherlock Holms - the most famous detective of all times?

 

II The next contest is to name the common word for these words:

  1. Winter, summer, autumn, spring (seasons).
  2. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday… (the days of the week).
  3. Green, white, red, blue, grey, black… (colours).
  4. December, January, February (winter months).
  5. March, April, May (spring months).
  6. Borshch, cutlet, omelette, soup (dishes or food).
  7. Cucumbers, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbages, onions (vegetables).
  8. Apples, plums, grapes, lemons, bananas (fruit).
  9. A cap, a jacket, trousers, a blouse, a dress (clothes).

10.A dog, a cat, a goat, a rabbit,  a pig ( domestic animals).

 

III The next contest will be to name as many words as you can on the topic:

“School”- to the first team

“My home”- to the second team.

We’d like our jury to tell us the score.

 

IV Do you like riddles? Guess!

1. It is a domestic animal. It is not very big. It catches mice.

2. It is a wild animal. It is not very big. Ii lives in the wood and likes to eat chickens.

3. It’s a wild animal. It is big and dangerous. It lives in Africa. It has a big head.

4. It’s a wild animal. It is big and long. It is green. This animal lives in the river.

5. It can live without water for a long time.

6. It’s a great friend of a man, this animal lives in the yard, at home. It can bark.

7. It’s a place to visit. There are collections of pictures, drawings there. We have this place in cities and towns.

8. It’s a very big and old city. It stands on the Dnipro. The main street is Khreshchatyk.

9. It is a room where we cook, eat, drink.

10. It’s a room where we watch TV, talk, discuss problems, meet our guests.

 

V The next task is to make sentences with the words:

1. Mrs Brown, her, Saturdays, on, often, cat, washes.

2. Sally, her sister, and, sometimes, shops, go to.

1. Billy, Carol, cinema, and, to, often, go, the.

2. Tim, Sunday, TV, Bill, and, on, watch, never.

 

VI This contest is to say a word with the opposite meaning. I’ll name the word to each team.

  1. Big – small
  2. New – old
  3. Good – bad
  4. Beautiful – ugly
  5. Day – night
  6. Evening – morning
  7. Clean – dirty
  8. Short – tall
  9.  Funny – sad

10. Difficult – easy

11. Hot – cold

12. Weak – strong

13. Cheap – expensive

14. Black – white

15. Fast – slow

16. Ill – healthy

 

VII This competition is called ‘Tongue twisters”. Say five times.

  1. Robert Rowley rolled a round roll round.

VIII Now I want to see how well you understand the English proverbs.

Listen to me and give the Ukrainian equivalents.

IX The next contest is “a spare word”. I’ll name the words on the topic, you will find the spare word.

I – Appearance: a nose, a hair, an ear, an eye, a face, a river, a hand.

II – Weather: a cloud, winter, rain, snow,spring, a capital, autumn.

I – School: a teacher, a day-book, a desk, a lesson, a picture, a factory.

II – School subjects: History, Music, Biology, Big Ben, Physics, Geography.

 

 X The next task is to guess what these sentences are about and answer.

1. She is the daughter of my mother. She is my… (sister).

2. She is the sister of my mother. She is my… (aunt).

3. He is the father of my father. He is my… (grandfather).

4. He is the father of my father. He is my… (grandfather).

5. She is the daughter of my aunt. She is my… (cousin).

6. They are children of my parents. They are my…(brothers).

7. He is the son of my uncle. He is my… (cousin).

8. She is the daughter of my grandparents. She is my…(mother).

 

It was our last competition. We’ll give our jury some time to sum up the results of the game. We have some minutes, so let’s play with our supporters.
