  • to revise vocabulary on the topic;
  • to develop pupils' speaking, reading, writing and listening skills;
  • to revise and consolidate the information about pupils' hobbies;
  • to encourage pupils to communicate in English.

Leisure Time and Hobbies

Objectives: 

  • to revise vocabulary on the topic;
  • to develop pupils’ speaking, reading, writing and listening skills;
  • to revise and consolidate the information about pupils’ hobbies;
  • to encourage pupils to communicate in English.

Equipment: PB by O. Karpiuk, cards for group and pair work, a PowerPoint presentation, a projector, a whiteboard, videos, a kids animation cartoon, handouts. 

Procedure

  1.      Introduction. Warm-up
  • T: Good morning, dear pupils! Im glad to see you.

Ps: Good morning! We are glad to see you, too.

T: Are you fine today?

Ps: Yes, we are.

T: Are you ready for the lesson?

Ps: Yes, we are.

T: The topic of our today’s lesson is “Leisure Time and Hobbies” (Slide 1). We’ll speak about the most popular free time activities and different hobbies. But first let’s practise our tongues. Read the poem after me. Mind your sound [ŋ] (Slide 2).

 

 

T: What do you like to do in your free time?

  •  What season is it now? (Slide 3)

P: It’s winter now.

T: You are right. Do you like winter? What does it bring? (Slide 4)

(Pupils answer using the Mind-Map)

  • Revising of the material  

T: What do you like to do in winter? What games do you like to play? (Slide 5)

P1: I like to skate.

P2: I enjoy skiing.

P3: I’m fond of playing snowballs. Etc.

  • Guessing game

T: Look! I’ve got a picture. Can you guess what is painted in it? (Slide 6) Answer my questions.

            

  1. Whom can you see in this picture? (A girl, her name’s Kate.)
  2. What is she doing?
  3. Where is she sitting?
  4. What can you see on the wall?
  5. What else is Kate doing?
  6. Is she singing?
  7. What’s her favourite musical instrument?

T: What are Kate’s hobbies? (music and painting)

  • Listening

T: Listen to one interesting episode from Kate’s school life. It happened some years ago when she was in the primary school (Slide 7).

 

 

Text “Kate – Something Different”

  1. Kate always tried to do something different, something new – to see what would happen and just for the fun of it.

One day Kate’s teacher told her class to paint pictures.

“Make them interesting”, she said. “Use your imagination. I’ll leave it up to you”.

T: What could children paint in their picture?

(Pupils’ answers)

  1. Mary painted a small island in the ocean with beautiful flowers and strange animals (Slide 8). There was a nice house in the garden in Jane’s picture. Andrew painted some children from another planet.

 

 

 T: And what about Kate? Imagine and describe her picture.

(Pupils’ answers)

  1. Kate painted a nice place in the country with a pink sun, a violet tree, green birds, yellow clouds and blue grass (Slide 9).

 

 

 T: What did Kate’s classmates do when they saw her picture?

(Pupils’ answers)

  1. When the other children saw Kate’s picture, they began to laugh. “Why did you colour them like this?” they asked.

 T: What did the girl answer?

  1.  “I know they look strange”, Kate said. “But I wanted to try something new. Kate’s teacher came up and looked at the girl’s picture with great interest.

 T: What did the teacher say?

(Pupils’ answers)

  1. “Well, you tried something different, and I’m very proud of you!” she said.

 

T: What would you paint if you were Kate?

 

  • Watching a kids animated cartoon

T: Let’s have a rest. You’ll see a kids animation cartoon “Hobby Train”. Were you attentive while watching the cartoon? Look at these hobby words (Slide 10). Which of them were travelling by the Hobby Train?

 

 

 

 

T: Please, put these hobby words in the correct order (as they were mentioned in the cartoon) (Slide 11).

     Key: crafting, bird watching, fishing, net surfing, photography, painting, tracking, singing, skating, cycling.

  • Game time

T: Do you like to travel? Do you want to travel by Hobby Train? In what carriage would you like to travel? Name your hobby, please.

  • Revising of the material

T: There are different groups of hobbies. Let’s divide them into categories (Ex. 1, p. 79/WB) 

  • Speaking

T: One more interesting hobby is collecting. Look at this word square. Find words that refer to things we can collect.

T: Try to guess what I collect.

T: Have you got any collections? Tell us about them, please.

T: Listen to some English-speaking kids very attentively and be ready to tell about their favourite pastime.

  • Reading

T: Read about their hobbies. Match the children and the pictures (Slide 13).

              Text 1. Hello, I’m Tom. I like outdoor hobbies, but I don’t like games. I’m very keen on photography and I enjoy riding a bike.

              Text 2. Hi! My name is Mary. My favourite hobby is music and I’m also keen on reading.

Text 3. Hello, I’m Max. I’m fond of sport. I play basketball every day. I’m interested in collecting stamps. My collection is great!

Text 4. Hi! My name is Jane. I like skiing in winter and gardening in summer. I enjoy nature.

  • Describing hobbies

T: What is your favourite hobby or your favourite pastime?

P1: Biking is my favourite pastime. I’m fond of riding a bike. I like to visit a lot of places in the countryside. Riding a bike is better than driving a car. You can hear birds’ songs and enjoy nature.

P2: It’s winter now. There are many things I like about winter. The most favourite of my pastimes is skiing and making a snowman. I love to sit by the fireplace and drink hot chocolate with my family. Etc.

  • Relaxation minute (Rhyming with movements) (Slide 14)

It was snowing, snowing, snowing.

It was falling on my head.

It was falling on the ground.

It was falling all around.

It was snowing, snowing, snowing.

It was snowing really hard.

  • Short dialogues

T: What were you doing at 4 p.m. yesterday? Act out your dialogues, please. 

  • Watching a cartoon

T: Look! These two funny bears are at the party.

They are wearing costumes. This is Panda Bear and his friend is wearing a costume of Scary Green Guy. What are they going to talk about? Watch and listen attentively, please.

T: Are the following statements true or false?

  1. Two Bears are playing in the park.   (F)
  2. Two Bears are at the party.     (T)
  3. They are playing a guessing game.    (T)
  4. Panda Bear likes to swim    (F)
  5. Green Bear invites Panda Bear to the park.   (T)

T: Our time is up. I hope you enjoyed our lesson. I am sure that you understood that our life would be very boring without interesting hobbies. Your home task for the next lesson is to complete a personal profile for a friend or a member of your family (Ex. 3, p. 79/WB).
