Variant 1
A What causes global warming?
B What will happen if global warming continues?
C What do experts think about global warming?
D What can I do about global warming?
E Is anybody doing anything about global warming?
Global warming
1 _____ Nobody really knows for sure how fast the planet is heating up. Experts do know, however, that if we don’t do anything about it, the problem will continue to get worse.
2 _____ Scientists blame fossil fuels for global warming. You see, when you burn gas or oil, they produce greenhouse gases. Then, when these greenhouse gases are trapped in the atmosphere, they prevent heat escaping into space and make the planet warmer. Cutting down trees adds to the problem.
3 _____ Slowing down global warming is a very difficult task and it seems that people can’t agree on what to do. Some people think that if governments make laws about it, that will help. Others believe that it should be up to each person or company to decide what to do.
4 _____ Again, the answer is, “Nobody really knows for sure”. However, people who study the Earth’s climate can make guesses. They believe that when the Earth keeps getting warmer, the sea level might rise, animals may become extinct, and there may be more storms and floods.
5 _____ It’s simple! If you use less energy, you’ll help slow down global warming. If you want to use less energy, turn off lights when you leave a room; use air conditioners wisely; take shorter showers; turn off a TV set when you go out.
_____ 1. Scientists don’t worry about global warming.
_____ 2. Gas and oil are fossil fuels.
_____ 3. The destruction of forests is one of the cases which cause global warming.
_____ 4. It isn’t hard to stop global warming.
_____ 5. Everybody is sure that only governments can stop global warming.
_____ 6. Global warming may have negative results.
_____ 7. People must use more energy to stop global warming.
_____ 8. We must use water economically.

A but many people have doubts about its safety
B especially those that do not produce carbon dioxide
C the wind farm will be profitable and has many advantages
D damage people’s enjoyment of areas with outstanding natural beauty
E for a wind farm in the north of England
As fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil are being used up, governments are keen to find alternative sources of energy, (1) _____. Nuclear power is one of the possible sources, (2) _____. Renewable energy sources include solar, wave and wind power. The UK Government is keen to use these sources of power and hopes to generate 20% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2020.
One British power company has identified a commercially suitable place (3) _____. The proposal is for a wind farm of 80 turbines over a large area. Each tower will be 60 metres tall and have a turbine of 35 metres in diameter. The wind farm will cover an area of several square kilometres and take five years to complete.
However, many people feel that onshore wind farms spoil the landscape, particularly in countryside area where they are usually situated. It is argued that they (4) _____. Other people argue that wind power is simply not reliable as an energy source as wind power output is variable and unpredictable.
_____ 1. The UK Government is interested to use the renewable sources of energy.
_____ 2. There is enough amount of gas, oil and coal in the depths of the Earth.
_____ 3. Everybody is sure that nuclear power is safe.
_____ 4. Wind power is a renewable source of energy.
_____ 5. Wind power can totally substitute fossil fuels.
_____ 6. Wind towers are not tall and have small turbines.
_____ 7. Wind towers are usually situated far away from towns and cities.
_____ 8. Some people are not satisfied with the wind farms.
