Internet Safety

The Internet is a big part of life for many teenagers. They send instant messages, use social media, watch videos, listen to music and study online. Recent researches have shown that the youth spends more than 7 hours a day in front of the screens which is absolutely unbelievable. In fact, teens spend more time using gadgets than on any other activity besides sleeping.

Many people are sure that the Internet is a "dangerous place". There are many features on social media. Users are able to create profiles, comment, post, share personal information with others. This list is not as safe as it might seem at the first glance.

What are the main dangers of the World Wide Web?

Bullying is a situation when a bully uses their power to hurt someone and make the victim feel bad. Cyberbullying is a similar process. It happens with the use of digital technology. There are many forms of cyberbullying: writing negative, offensive or hateful comments, spreading rumours, creating fake accounts to make fun of a person, trolling or stalking people, sharing someone’s personal information. Bullies can pick on the appearance, grades, personality or personal preferences of the person. Online bullying is a serious problem among teenagers. Victims may have lower self-esteem, feel scared, sad and angry.

Sharing personal information on the Internet is not a good idea. Identity theft is a type of crime when a thief steals your name, photos and creates a fake profile on social media. Some thieves can also use your credit card number or a password.

Advertisements always try to make you buy new products by making them look very good. The danger hides in social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. The data is collected from users, later to be used to target the advertisements. In other words, they know your age, location, interests.

Let’s be honest, people like to share only positive moments on social media. It creates a perfect image of careless life without any troubles. There are two potential threats to it. First: many teens start to compare their life with the life of others. Imagine you are having a bad day and open Instagram just to see the perfect unreal word. This would probably make you feel even worse.
