There are nearly 7 thousand languages in the world, most of them has huge number of accents which are different and close to each other at the same time. One language can have from one to two and more hundred accents. In English linguists had counted one hundred & sixty different accents.
The concept of "accent" was discovered and described by Daniel Jones in his work “English Pronouncing Dictionary” (1917). [1;7]
An accent is a characteristic pronunciation that differs from the generally accepted literary norm of the language. It can be "foreign-speaking" (a foreigner speaks a foreign language) or "local" (different manner of speech of native speakers). We shouldn`t think that “accent” and “dialect” are the same, these concepts are completely different from each other.
Accept is changing words on the phonetic level but mean is staying whereas dialect is full changing of words.
Joseph Wright, the author The English dialect grammar, wrote that one language has many different accents. [2;2]
The accent which people using in England province is completely different from General English, so the same sentence may pronounce with for example with different power.
English sentence you must eat it up. They exemplify a north-of -England and a West Indies accent respectively; they differ from one another, and from the same sentence in other accents, in several phonetic or phonological details. Non-standard varieties of
General English are illustrated by (2a, b), in which characteristic local lexico-syntactic usage is added to the accent details of (1). Versions (3a, b) fall outside General English: (3a-) is from north-of England traditional-dialect, and (Jb) from 'basilectal' Jamaican Creole. [2;2]
Accent has big influence on the formation of culture. Usually, people make summaries about other people when they just heard accent.
Large number of accents can create completely different nations and it`s doesn`t matter that they know the same language (for example English).
So, for Example RP will be defer from Irish English.
“Right away in the first year of life babies are starting to show this social preference – moving towards someone who speaks in a way that’s familiar to them,” says the study’s lead researcher Katherine Kinzler, now at Cornell University.
To Kinzler, accents are under-studied. “They tie us to our identity in a similar way that our gender and race does. For some children, accent can be a more powerful indicator of group identity than race, she has found. When five-year-olds were shown pictures of either black or white children, they preferred those who were the same race. At this age, they don’t have the motivation to control prejudice in the way adults do”, says Kinzler. [3]
As you can understand from represented phrase accent is a part of our identity, so as you know identity is the first & basic point that create new nation it can help us to form our own culture.
Besides accent can influence on our way of speaking & can show to others from what part one or another we are. For example, when we hear cocni we understand that the person who have this accent is from London.
