TEXT: “Ukrainian Flowers and Their Meanings”

Ukraine is a country of colorful traditions. Many flowers in Ukraine are more than just plants – they are important national symbols.

The sunflower is one of the most famous Ukrainian symbols. It means warmth, life, and energy. Ukrainians grow sunflowers everywhere.

The poppy is a symbol of memory. It reminds us of those who fought for freedom.

Kalyna, or viburnum, is a symbol of beauty and love. It appears in songs, embroidery, and folk stories.

Periwinkle is a symbol of eternal life. People often plant it near homes.

The blue cornflower means peace and purity. Ukrainian girls used to weave it into wreaths.

These flowers show the soul of Ukraine.

Cherry is a symbol of Ukraine, as it represents the native land, home («cherry orchard around the house»), motherhood, maiden beauty, love, and union with the Divine World. It is deeply rooted in Ukrainian culture, folklore, and literature, symbolizing eternal spring, holiness (white blossom), protection, and even immortality.

The willow symbolizes long endless life. It's just the willow that symbolizes the pagan god Yarylo who gave the sun to people. People believe that the willow can drive off all the evil forces from people and animals. The branches of willows are blessed on the willow Sunday. The willow purifies both water and air. People always took water for drinking un- der the willow it was always cold, pure and tasty. In Ukraine many roads, sandy hills, lakes, pools and river banks, vegetable gardens are usually planted by willows, they strengthen the soil, make it drier. It can help people when they are ill - the leaves and bark are widely used in medicine. There are many legends, poems, songs, sayings and proverbs about the willow.

SHORT TEXT

P1. Willow is a nice tree with thin branches, nar- row leaves which grows along the roads, near rivers, lakes, on sandy hills, near the vegetable gardens, strengthen the soil, makes it dry, helps people to find water, purifies water and air.

Sayings about the plant symbols.

T. There are many legends, poems, songs, say- ings and proverbs about the snowball and the wil- low. I'd like to propose to you some sayings about these Ukrainian symbols. I'll give you some cards I and you'll match the Ukrainian sayings with the English equivalents:

Group 1. «A snowball»

1. Choose a girl like a snowball flower.

2. Admire a snowball while it's blossoming, and a child while he's growing baby.

3. It has become cold, the fish isn't catching, when the snowball is blossoming.

Group 2. «The willow»

1. In a dry willow's bark a devil is hiding.

2. Where is the willow, there is the water.

3. Be as high as a willow and as rich as the earth.

Group 3: «Cherry tree»

T. Now, children, let's play a little. One group will explain: the definition of the plant and the second group have to guess what plant it is.

P6. It is of blue and yellow colours, it symbolized blue sky and yellow wheat.

Poems and songs about Ukrainian plant symbols

T. Who knows more poems and songs about Ukrainian plant symbols?

A contest.

So, children we, now, got a lot of interesting information about such Ukrainian plant symbols as a snowball and a willow, but do you know any songs or poems about these symbols? If you know, let's sing and recite poems.

P1. I know a song about a snowball tree and I would like to sing it.

T. You are welcome, Julia.

A girl is singing «При долині кущ калини».

P2. My teacher helped me to translate into Eng- lish a poem «Our Dwelling» («рідна хата») and  I want to recite it:

Many countries in the world

Many people on the earth

Mountains, valleys,

Herbs and flowers.

But the best is our country,

And the dearest for us.

It's Ukraine — it's our mother

Our people's dwelling house.

Endless steps are moaning there,

As they want to speak to us.

And the sun is shining brightly,

The pupils recite poems and sing songs in Ukraine and English languages about Ukraine and Ukrainian plant symbols.

 To write a text about a snowball and a willow with 2-3 sentences about curative abilities of these plants. P3. I think it is a cherry-tree.
