Theatre

Theatre is a place where you can see a play staged. The 20th century brought great changes into the theatre. Television, radio, cinema, video altered the course of the major performing & entertaining arts & created the new ones. But still there are hundreds of musical comedy theatres, drama theatres, opera houses, puppet theatres, juvenile theatres, philharmonics & conservatories.

A theatre consists of two parts, the stage & the hall. They are separated by a curtain & an orchestra. The curtain is dropped or lowered between the scenes or acts of a play. The public sits in the second part of the theatre, called an auditorium. The most expensive seats are in the stalls, the boxes & the dress-circle. The seats in balcony, pit & gallery (gods) are comparatively cheaper. An intricate system of lights illuminates the stage. While the curtain is down, the workers on the stage can change the scenery & prepare the stage for the next part of the performance.

A play lives a long life before it makes its appearance on the stage before the audience. It is a real part of art & its creation calls for inspiration, talent & artistic ingenuity. A playwright conceives an idea & after months of hard work his idea develops into a script of the play. And finally when everything is ready & the rehearsal goes off without a hitch, a dress rehearsal is called. After that the curtain rises, the play faces the audience on its first night.

If the play is great & the cast is brilliant, the house is always packed & the actors receive a tremendous acclimation & are encored. It is obvious that the play is a great success.

I.Dramatize the dialogue:

A:  I say, let’s go to the theatre tonight.

B:  Oh, what a good idea! I say, what about going to the theatre tonight?

C:  Why not? Look here, why don’t we go to the theatre tonight?

D:  Oh, I’d love to! Look here, what do you say to going to the theatre tonight?

E:  You know, I don’t feel like out tonight. Perhaps, you, Kate… What will you say?

F:  No, I’d rather stay at home. Maybe, Mary will join the rest… See, Mary, Paul suggested going to the         theatre tonight.

G: With great pleasure. I have been looking forward to seeing this performance for a long time. I’ll ask John if he wants to see it, too. Eh, John, what about you?

H: I’ll go… But the way, what performance is supposed to be given tonight?

I:  Really, who happens to know the play we’re going to see tonight, I wonder?

II. Make up a short story:

I am a great theatre-goer. I love theatre very much. I try to see the most interesting performances that are on at our theatres. I am fond of the drama theatre & the opera house. I also try not to miss the performances of Moscow & Kyiv theatres. These theatres are famous for their excellent companies & wonderful acting. I usually go to the evening (matinee) performances & try to buy tickets in advance. I like to have good seats in the stalls or in the dress-circle. From these seats one gets a good view of the stage. I am fond of ballet. My favourite ballet is “The Swan Lake”. It has a long run & is always a great success with public. Everything is magnificent there: the music & the dancing. The leading part dancers are brilliant beyond all doubts, & when the final curtain falls, they receive many curtain calls.

III. Explain the underlined words in written.

IV. Give synonyms to the words:

A play,  to alter,  to create,  to separate,  an orchestra,  a public,  expensive,  intricate,  to illuminate,  to prepare,  great,  brilliant,  packed,  tremendous,  acclamation,  obvious
