In each group there is an American and the rest of the group are foreigners. It’s your choice. You have two minutes for preparing a short conversation – quiz between the native American and the foreigner. After that some pairs will present it to us.

Big cities of the USA
As we have already known, the United States of America is a very diverse country. Among the USA's biggest cities are New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Detroit, Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Washington.
The capital of the USA as you know of course is Washington in the district of Columbia. It's an administrative city without much industry. The American capital has a lot of places of interests. One should visit the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, the Capitol and lots of others.
New York is the largest city and a port in the United States. It's one of the financial and business centres of the world. It's famous for its skyscrapers. One of the most famous statues in the world stands on an island in New York Harbor. It's the Statue of Liberty. The second biggest city of the USA is Los Angeles in California. Not far from Los Angeles is Hollywood, the centre is the movie industry. The city has four of five busiest highways in North America. Los Angeles is not only film centre but also business, industrial, trade and criminal centre.
San Francisco on the Pacific coast is a big port and shipbuilding centre. It's famous for its bridges, fog and hills. Don't leave San Francisco without seeing the structure that has become its symbol -The Golden Bridge.
Chicago is the third largest city in the USA. The third world's tallest building Sears Tower (442 m) is here. Chicago is one of the industrial centres and the biggest ports. It's also the chief railroad centre of the USA.
Philadelphia was the first capital of the USA and here the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. Nowadays is the fourth largest city in the USA. It 's famous its museums, art galleries, concert halls, theatres. That's why it has nicknamed the "Athens of America".
Boston is situated on the Atlantic coast of the USA. Speaking about Boston we have to say about very important historically so-called Boston Tea - Party in 1773 and of course about one of the oldest and the most respective among American Universities -Harvard University.
Detroit is the oldest city of the Great Lake cities. Detroit is a major automobile, manufacturing centre. Its nickname is the "Motor City". The famous Ford automobile empire was founded here.
The capital of Texas is Houston, the state largest city and leading port. It's the centre of oil and aerospace research, the centre of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). Houston is home of a symphony orchestra, ballet and opera.

famous for its numerous places of interests, which attract a lot of visitors.

The Statue of Liberty
One of the most famous statues in the world stands on an island in New York Harbor. This statue is the statue of Liberty. It is the symbol of American democracy. The statue weights 225 tons and 301 feet tall. The Statue of Liberty was put up in 1886. It was a gift to the United States from people of France. You can walk up 354 stairs to get to the top of the statue. There is a museum on Liberty Island, at the foot of the statue. The French sculptor Augusta Bartholdi built it, but the author of the Eiffel Tower Alexander Eiffel designed it. The original name of the statue was "Liberty Enlightening the World". Liberty carries the torch of freedom in her right hand and is stepping out of broken chains. In her left hand she is holding a tablet with the inscription "July 4, 1776" - American Independence Day.

The Empire State Building
The Empire State Building is at 5th Avenue and 34th Street. Like the Statue of Liberty and Brooklyn Bridge, it is instantly recognized as a symbol of New York - a symbol, which captures the power, energy and excitement of one of the world's most -loved and most -hated city. It is a 102-story building was built in 1931. It includes two observatories, one on the 86th floor and the other on the 102nd floor. It was the tallest building in the world until 1971. There are 6500 windows in it. The building was first cleaned in 1962. The first TV station was located here. In the famous film "King Kong" King Kong has his final battle from the top of the Empire State Building but others complain that their favourite New York building has been turned into the biggest Christmas tree in the world!

Brooklyn Bridge
Brooklyn Bridge is north of the old South Street Seaport, on the East River. It connects Manhattan Island to Brooklyn, a district where many Italians still live. It was one of the great engineering milestones of the 19 century. It was opened on 24 of May in 1883, and thousands of New Yorkers came to see it. There were too many of them. The big crowd pushed some people off the bridge into the water; more men and women died under the feet of the crowd.
