Lesson Plan: Present Perfect Tense in Context

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
Students will be able to use the present perfect tense to describe experiences and actions that have taken place in the past but are relevant to the present.

ASSESSMENTS:
Students will complete sentences using the present perfect tense based on prompts related to personal experiences and the given text about John’s trip.

KEY POINTS:

  • The structure of the present perfect tense: have/has + past participle.
  • Usage of time expressions such as "already," "yet," "never," and "ever."
  • How to form questions and negations in the present perfect tense.
  • Understanding the context of experiences and actions that connect past events to the present.

OPENING:

  • Begin with a question: "Have you ever traveled to another country?"
  • Allow students to share their experiences with a partner.
  • Introduce the lesson objective and how the present perfect tense will help them describe their experiences.

INTRODUCTION TO NEW MATERIAL:

  • Explain the present perfect tense structure with examples:
    • "I have visited France."
    • "She has never been to Canada."
  • Discuss the significance of time expressions:
    • "I have already eaten lunch."
    • "He hasn’t seen that movie yet."
  • Address the misconception that the present perfect tense only refers to past events without any connection to the present.

GUIDED PRACTICE:

  • Provide sentence starters and have students fill in the blanks using the present perfect tense.
  • Example: "John has __ (visit) London."
  • Scaffold questions from simple to complex:
    • "What has John done?"
    • "How many countries has he visited?"
  • Monitor student responses and provide feedback.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:

  • Assign students to write a short paragraph about their travel experiences using at least five sentences in the present perfect tense.
  • Set behavioral expectations: work quietly and seek help if needed.

CLOSING:

  • Have students share one sentence from their paragraphs with the class.
  • Summarize the lesson by highlighting the key points covered.

EXTENSION ACTIVITY:

  • For students who finish early, ask them to create a travel itinerary for a new trip using the present perfect tense to describe what they plan to do and see.

HOMEWORK:

  • Students will write a diary entry describing their experiences over the weekend, using the present perfect tense.
