DIRECT AND REPORTED SPEECH

Direct speech is the words that people actually say.“You look great,” he said. Reported speech is used to express what others say. When we report statements in the present we use say or tell. My relatives say I am good at dancing. When we report statements in the past we use said or told. My relatives said I was good at dancing.

Remember!say to smb / tell smb + that + subject + predicate + subordinate clausesthe conjunction that may not be used. When converting direct speech to indirect pronouns change or remain unchanged depending on the content. We usually change the tenses and certain words when we report what someone said

Commands and requests. The verb to say, to tell in the words of the author is replaced by the verbs to ask, to tell, to order or their synonyms. “Go to the board,” the teacher told. – The teacher told Mary to go to the board. In reported speech, the verb is put in the infinitive form.“Be quiet!” – The teacher told the students to be quiet. In the negative form, the particle not is placed before the infinitive.“Don’t sit down!” – The teacher ordered not to sit down.
